Trip Report - South America in a whirlwind - Easter Island - Lima - New Yok City (NYC) in Business Class

Filed in archive on February 17, 2012

IPC airport only has 1 or 2 flights a day (Santiago 7x, Papeete 2x, Lima 4x a week). For the IPC -LIM route LAN uses the same aircraft model - a 767-300ER with an international business class. Expect no real dinner service though - a half edible sandwich is all you'll get for the 5.5 hrs. But again the seat is fantastic and you can catch up on movies.

After a short stop in Lima (50 minutes) I was boarding the completely full identical plane for teh ride to NYC. LAN asks before take-off for filling out the breakfast menu and then gives you the option to sleep through the flight. There is also a small dinner service but nothing memorable was on offer :)

I was woken up for breakfast just over North Carolina (as I wanted) and got my bowl of cereals and croissants. Nothing great but helps to catch a fresh start in NYC.

Trip Report - South America in a whirlwind - Easter Island - Inaki Uhi

Filed in archive on February 17, 2012

When I looked up hotels on Easter Island on Expedia I was stunned - prices were 300+ for pretty simple accommodation (from the looks of it) So I booked the only guest house that showed rooms available. Inaki Uhi lists 'hot water' as amenity - so you may guess it's really basic. There is Internet but it require electricity which was only on for a couple of hours out of the 48hrs I spent on the island. AC is not an option either but Easter Island is not as hot - very similar to the Hawaian Islands but no intermediate rain showers and even more fierce sun rays.

Inaki Uhi owner Alvarro is a friendly former English teacher who also runs tours to the North and South of the Island and as a descendant of the original inhabitants of Easter Island he has lots of stories to share. Great tours.

There was also a the yearly festival going on while I was there and it's just minutes from Hanga Roa (the only village on the island) to the beach and the stage. There's a couple of restaurants but expect basic ingredients and cuisine for roughly 2-3 NYC prices.

Seeing the Moai and the historical sights is spectacular. Easter Island is a beautiful spot (though only has one beach). It's a mystical place that probably needs more exploring than just 2 days - it's a fantastic outdoor museum.

Trip Report - South America in a whirlwind - LAN Business Class Santiago de Chile - Easter Island

Filed in archive on February 17, 2012

LAN and Chile Airport teamed up for a very efficient morning mix. Check-in took 2 minutes, 10s for security (that is the actual screening!) with 2 minutes in line and then waiting 90 minutes at the gate. There is no lounge after security for domestic flights.

LAN uses 767-300ER for this flight and the business class is a lie-flat seat just like on international flights. Very generous I must say. Food is not a great option (again Chile does not strike me as a foodies paradise) but there is a great IFE that keeps you entertained for several hours. The flight was uneventful not even some turbulence :)
