Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2012 - Cases

spacer The Cooler Master HAF XB is built on the HAF (High Air Flow) principle which favors multiple fan positions and strategic chassis venting. The idea is that with better chassis cooling you can improve system performance and minimize noise.

Can Call of Duty Black Ops II top CoD's record sales streak?

Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Web

This story at c|net has me wondering.  Do games sell based on "what" they are or based on what they "were"??  Its true that the last few Call of Duty games made a mint and set back to back sales records but were the games any good??

Some, myself included, say no.  Call of Duty Black Ops was nothing more than a FPS "movie" that involved shooting and walking down a path.  In fact you could get thru one of the first missions without firing a single shot until the game made you fire to continue.  I'm going to blame the console market for this one since a "real" FPS would be too complex for your average 10 year old to operate with a trigger and two thumb sticks but does that excuse game developers from actually trying to make a good game?

Over the last several years, each Call of Duty game has set a new entertainment sales record. Last year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 generated over $400 million in revenue during its first 24 hours on store shelves. That game followed the $360 million Call of Duty: Black Ops made in its first day. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 posted $310 million in launch-day sales.

Given that trajectory, it would appear that Black Ops II will beat out last year's Call of Duty game. Just yesterday, Amazon announced that Black Ops II broke its record for most pre-ordered game. The e-retailer didn't say how many customers pre-ordered the device, but its announcement portends to a major launch.

I for one will be boycotting this game and will do whatever I can NOT to buy it.  Of course if someone gives me a steam key that is a different story but for now I'll just hold on to my $60US.

Fall 2012 GPU and Driver Comparison Roundup @ HardOCP

Published: Monday, November 12, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Email

We all know that your choice in video drivers can have a profound impact on gaming and benchmark performance.  The question is, how do you know which ones to use?  Video cards mfgs will tell you "download the latest", which is a good rule of thumb but, will that give you what you are looking for?

With the recent release of new beta drivers from both AMD and NVIDIA, and the upping of clocks by AMD, significant performance gains have been claimed by both parties for current generation video cards. We will investigate with a 6-way roundup comparison to see if we can crown a champion.

Super-Earth next door could be habitable

Published: Friday, November 09, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Web

Earth-like planet and only 42 light years away??  I'd say sign me up but I'd rather keep my feet planted right here.

It's only 42 light years away, it could have liquid water, and it's more than seven times bigger than our planet (in mass). So once we destroy this one, we're all set.

This latest super-Earth is called HD 40307g. It may sound like a tax form, but it's almost guaranteed to be paradise. It's right in a sweet spot orbit around HD 40307, a smaller star than the sun in the constellation of Pictor, where liquid water is possible. And the IRS can't reach you.

If you check out this story be sure to read the comments, some are to die for  spacer

New U.S. address in Foxconn's future? Not Likley

Published: Friday, November 09, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Web

I caught this story on Digitimes stating that Foxconn was thinking about expanding in the US and woudl be setting up a factory in Detroit or LA.  While I think this might be a good thing I highly doubt it will ever happen.

The reporter at CNet tends to agree.

With unemployment close to 8 percent, you can understand why this headline would grab peoples' attention. A story in Digitimes reports that Foxconn is scouting prospective sites in the United States for future manufacturing plants.

I was skeptical about this story -- which talks about production of LCD TVs, not iPhones -- and that might have been the end of it.

But maybe it's not quite as crazy as it seems. A spokeswoman for Foxconn told me in an e-mail that the company "already has multiple facilities based in the U.S." but she also went on to say that "there are no current plans to expand our operations there at this time."

It wouldn't have ever worked out anyway, Americans are too expensive   I mean just look at the old 80's film Gung Ho that explored the Japanese take over of the American car industry.

Silverstone Heligon HE01 Twin Tower Heatsink Review @ Frostytech.com

Published: Wednesday, November 07, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Email

Awesome heatsink!  Be sure to check out our review of the Silverstone HE01 Performance Heatsink.

Occupying every square millimeter of space above the CPU that a cooler possibly could, the Silverstone Heligon HE01 heatsink is a novel approach that seems designed to accommodate motherboards with excessively large VRM heatsinks. From the center-point of the CPU, the Heligon HE01 extends ~48mm to the fore, ~71mm towards the aft. The six heatpipes converge at a chunky nickel plated copper base plate, eschewing the whole exposed-heatpipe-trend-thing. Noise wise, Heligon HE01 heatsink ranges for loud to whisper quiet.

I would fully expect to see more dual tower designs like this in the near future.

EK Supremacy CPU Water Block Full-Nickel @ PureOverclock

Published: Wednesday, November 07, 2012 - By: Dennis
News Source: Email

I have recently been looking at what has changed in the world of watercooling and EK has been one of the front runners in market penetration.  Jury is still out on performance but based on the results of this review.  Well, you'll just have to check it out.

Supremacy means to dominate, control, and that one is superior to others. EK claims the Supremacy outperforms its legendary Supreme HF block by 2°C, and has better hydraulic flow by 20%. Today we’re going to put this water block in the ring with some of today’s top CPU water blocks to see how it defends against the other ruthless arse-kicking water blocks. Read on to find out what this new flagship cooling block is all about.

From a style standpoint I'm not a fan but the block design looks pretty good.
