Challenges for Independent News Media in Pakistan

spacer Over 60 people attended CIMA's event on September 27, 2012. For the past two years, Pakistan has been ranked by international media monitors as the most dangerous place on earth for journalists. Media workers have been kidnapped, tortured, and beaten to death for delving into the nation’s potent military apparatus and spy agencies. Challenges for Independent News Media in Pakistan examines the security situation for journalists and its effect on their reporting, as well as attempts by key officials in the military, intelligence agencies, and judiciary to silence critical reporting.

Country Profiles

CIMA has compiled data on the media in developing countries around the world. This data is drawn primarily from IREX's Media Sustainability Index, Freedom House's Freedom of the Press index, and Reporters Without Borders's Press Freedom Index. While these indexes measure different aspects of press freedom, by including each of them, we hope to provide a more complete picture of the media in each country. Also included in these summaries is data from the Committee to Protect Journalists as well as news updates from IFEX.
