Tom just kicked off the 2012 season with a 3rd place finish at the Tour of California! That is his second consecutive podium finish at the Tour of California. That is a excellent start to his racing year sets Tom up well for the Tour de France.

Icon LASIK patient Tommy D finishes 9th in The Tour de France
Congratulations to Tom Danielson for finishing 9th in the 2011 Tour de France! It was Tom's first Tour de France and he was obviously ready. Tom also finished 3rd at this years Tour of California. Next up for Tom is the USA Pro Cycling Challenge which starts August 22nd in Colorado Springs. Icon will be at every stage starting in Colorado Springs. Tom Receives the Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
Like a certain percentage of the population Tom was not a good candidate for LASIK. Tom suffered from dry eyes which were exacerbated by his long hours training for the toughest bike races in the world. The doctors at Icon LASIK recommended that Tom receive the Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens), created by STAAR® Surgical Company. The Visian ICL is a phakic intraocular lens (IOL) used for the treatment of myopia and other refractive errors. The simplest way to explain this is to think of an IOL as a very high tech semi-permanent (it's surgically removable) contact lens.
How the ICL works
The Visian ICL rests in front of the eye's lens leaving the natural structure of the eye intact. This is preferred in case the ICL should ever have to be removed. This varies from cataract surgeries where the eye's natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. The removal of the eye's lens in cataract surgery is necessary because of the nature of the disease (a clouding of the lens). Whereas an ICL patient's lens is healthy and does not need treatment.
The ICL has a unique negatively charged collagen which reduces long term inflammation. This is ideal for quick recovery and an almost indefinite length of use.
LASIK vs ICL - Is LASIK or the ICL better?
LASIK is a great choice for most patients. However, some patients are not candidates for LASIK. When you are not a candidate for LASIK the IOL is an excellent choice. It is more expensive, however, the results are typically extremely good with minimal side effects.
