A look at those who would be NH GOP Chair

By Shawn Millerick

(5)

The New Hampshire Republican State Committee must now begin the difficult task of rebuilding. If history is any guide, they will use this opportunity to install someone as Chair who has little practical experience, limited fundraising skill or capability, no nose for talented staff and precious little message discipline and a penchant for ideology over [...]

We let Democrats define the terms of our defeat

By Carolyn McKinney

When Democrats set the terms of the 2012 campaign for state and federal offices, Republican leaders blew their horns about jobs and the economy and counted on their position of strength and the glaring weaknesses in their enemy’s lines to secure victory. Republicans lost because they forgot to tell the troops about the Democratic weaknesses. [...]

Will NH Republicans learn the lessons from Tuesday?

By Fergus Cullen

The New Hampshire Union Leader originally published this column on November 9, 2012: There is no education in the second kick of a mule. In 2006, New Hampshire Republicans suffered their worst defeat ever. After recovering in 2010, this week the Republican Party finds itself back in 2006, facing the same existential questions about why [...]

Editorial: Maggie Hassan’s only clear position is that she can’t be trusted

By Shawn Millerick

Driving through scenic Portsmouth several days before the election, one can spot a large 4×8 Romney-Ryan sign with the words ‘flip flopper’ scrawled across it in spray paint.  It’s an epithet Democrats have long tried to tie to the Republican presidential nominee but haven’t been able to make stick.  Why?  Because when Romney has changed [...]

Buckle up for Maggie Hassan’s latest flip-flop on individual liberty

By Andrew Hemingway

Democrat Maggie Hassan’s now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t answer on a question about instituting a seatbelt law during Thursday’s WMUR-TV gubernatorial debate is enough to make you wonder if she’s ever heard the Granite State’s ‘Live Free or Die’ motto. During the debate’s lightening round – where candidates were asked to keep answers to a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ [...]

Lamontagne: The Paradox of the Good Person in Politics

By Fergus Cullen

Lamontagne’s been a leader in Easter Seals, Catholic Charities, Court Appointed Special Advocates, the Boy Scouts, and the list goes on. These causes are a more personal commitment for Ovide and his wife, Bettie, than many may be aware. After getting married at age 21 – the Lamontagnes have been married 33 years – the couple adopted their first child though Catholic Charities. Two years later, they were approached privately on behalf of a young woman who was pregnant, and in time they adopted a second baby. And in between, a foster child came into their lives.
