I made screenshots of VCD, SVCD and DVD to compare picture quality. I've used JPEG format for the web but I've checked that it doesn't biased comparison. I shot with SthSDVD software.

DVD sample from Dogma:
German SVCD sample (got off the web, svcdgs.zip (12.5MB)), near DVD quality:
Home-made SVCD sample done from Dogma DVD rip (dogma.zip
(16.4MB)):
- quality is DVD-like
- MPEG-2 clip is downloadable from dogma_mpg.zip
(15.1MB) to burn the SVCD by yourself
Home-made SVCD done from standalone DVD player and PCTV
capture:
- motion is much better than VCD
- I've improved capture process, now 480x576 with PICVideo Q=18 which I deinterlace
(VirtualDUB Telecine filter) and TMPG encode mode is interlaced
- download MPEG-2 clip and TMPG template from dvdcap.zip
(8.9MB)
Home-made SVCD sample done from Hi8 camcorder and PCTV
capture:
- capture is very good quality with 480x576 and PICVideo Q=18
- it seems that we can't get better quality with TMPG settings unless with set
over the
standard with higher resolution or bit rate
- download MPEG-2 clip and TMPG template from hi8cap.zip
(9.2MB)
Home-made VCD (my perfect VCD, monvoisin.zip
(3.8MB)) from standalone DVD
player and PCTV, shot 1:
Home-made VCD (my perfect VCD) from standalone
DVD player and PCTV, shot 2:
- motion MPEG-1 artefacts are nearly invisible even on the shot
Home-made VCD sample done from Hi8 camcorder and PCTV
capture, shot 1:
- low-motion scene (good quality but SVCD would bring more details)
Home-made VCD sample done from Hi8 camcorder and PCTV
capture, shot 2:
- motion and detail scene, MPEG-1 artefacts visible on the shot but nearly invisible
during movie playback
