My regular 9 to 5 job puts me in a position where I am asked to retrieve data from crashed hard drives or simply move data from an old hard drive to an upgraded one. I am sure many of our readers have been in this position before themsevles. For me, the first step to such a task is to invest in a good external enclosure or hard drive dock. If the final result is to keep the old drive as a permanent external storage, then the enclosure is the best bet as it will protect the drive when moving it from place to place. Vantec makes both types of external devices and plenty of them.
Vantec newest enclosure is a 2.5" hard drive model. The Nexstar TX is an all black slim box made of aluminum. The TX is a low cost alternative to other enclosures including others from Vantec. The TX is simple-looking in every way and looks to perform well and get the job done.
Vantec speaks on the Nexstar TX

Packaging and contents
The TX comes packed in an all black box which is a change from the part black and part whatever color boxes their other enclosures come in. After twisting and turning the front of the package to avoid the shine glaring off the plastic wrapping, I was finally able to photograph this image of the black enclosure. Underneath the title of the enclosure, the text describes exactly what you can do with the TX: transport, listen and watch data, music and photos. The reverse side gives a listing of features and specifications.
Inside the box are all the necessary components needed to install your hard drive and get it ready for usage. These include: the enclosure, USB Y cable, manual, screws and a carrying pouch.

Features
Closer look
The TX is a very nice looking case made of light aluminum. The top of the casing has the Vantec logo and the NexStar TX name etched in. Flipping the enclosure over on its back, we see nothing but black as there is nothing going on here. The sides are just as plain as there are only two screw mounts (one on each side). The TX maintains a nice sleek profile all the way around.
The back end of the enclosure is the only end that has some type of action going on. This action is a single USB mini connector and a LED that shines green when power is giving to the unit. The unit needs two USB cables to operate properly and the computer that you plug it into must have two USB really close to one another as there is a short distance in the Y of the cable.
Separating the two pieces that make up the enclosure, we have an empty box and the head of the unit that consists of a small PCB that has the internal SATA and power connection all in one piece that mates up well with the back of a laptop drive.
There is not much to assembling and getting the TX in operation mode. Placing the drive onto the PCB board, then sliding the two back into the housing is all that is needed. Secure the two pieces using the two screws that come with the enclosure and you are done.
