Unleashed the cage the the cork shot off like a gun followed by gushing beer and of course the cleanup...
Once I managed to get some beer into my glass it appeared a hazy, golden straw yellow with a dense foamy white head. The quarter inch of fluffy head sits comfortably throughout drinking and leaves some streaky lacing behind (as expected). However, the nose is sweeter than expected and reminiscent of white grapes and fruity yeast esters. The nose is also tart and slightly reminiscent of stomach acid. In comparison to a cantillon, this geuze is on the mild side. It drinks very easily with a bit of dank culture that resides on my palate long after each sip. It's semi-dry, vinous and the alcohol is quite well masked. Not much to complain about with this beer, except it needs more funk and sourness.

Brewing season 2006 - 2007. Best before 24 - 09 - 2029. Batch L9119.

Appearance: Very hazy, glossy gold color with high perceived effervescence, small fizzy white head and no lacing. Also of note: the generous amount of yeast floating around.

Smell: Medium in intensity. Lactic, yeasty, sour cherry, vinegary, a bit oaky, lemony, slightly vegetable and theres also horsey / leather notes.

Taste: Medium in intensity. Tangy, citric, yeasty. Muddy and underwhelming.

Palate: Medium to medium low carbonation. Medium body. Medium to medium high acidity. Alcohol plays well into the whole and the palate is pleasant.

Overall: Sufferable. I realize that the blending process makes it alot harder to make something palatable, but (and with that in mind) it's still a beer that lacks the complexity and elegance necessary to break into the 4 mark.

375mL bottle poured into a Lindeman's flute. Best by 23-09-2030. 7% ABV.

Appearance: Poured slowly to leave the sediment in. Bright dark gold with a persistent off-white rocky foam on top. No lacing.

Smell: Musty, hint of tart apple and maybe some berry in there towards the back.

Taste: Very tart and sour, but not mouth-puckeringly sour. Granny smith tart apple, oak, a hint of very tart cherry in here as well. Some tart lemon comes out as well as the beer warms up. Definitely better as it warms up.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated, but not fizzy. Spicy on the tongue, airy. Just a bit of something sticking to the teeth at the end. Very dry.

Overall / Drinkability: I have heard that this beer is an acquired taste, and I don't think I've fully acquired it yet, but for style, it is a very intense lambic and is very sour and tart. Still, an interesting experience but I think one per night is enough. Perhaps another time I'll revisit this style and see if I feel differently about it.

2011 bottle. Poured from a small bottle into a Duvel snifter. Beautiful crystal-clear gold color with fairly low carbonation. On the nose, I'm getting sour apples and white wine and a little bit of wet, grassy kind of aroma. There is also a little bit of that funky, wet sock kind of smell.

Light body and firm mouthfeel. Nondescript sour flavors and notes of under-ripe apples, fresh lemon, and grapes predominate. I also detect something like thyme. The acidity is not vinegary or over-bearing. It's pleasant, not too mouth-drying, and somewhat appetizing. There is a faint oakiness on the finish.

Flavor-wise, I enjoyed this beer and think it is excellent. My main gripe with it is the low carbonation. I think higher carbonation would open up the palate a bit more and complement the flavor nicely. Moreover, the sourness seems a bit one-dimensional (fruit). I don't have a lot of experience with this style, but I would like to try a gueuze with a bit more complexity.

Bottle says 20/01/2031, which suggests to me that it was bottled January 2011. Tasted 1 July 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours a golden orangey-yellow color. Very clear, with about 1 finger of white head, all big bubbles. Tons of carbonation visible in the glass.

Smell is a musty, yeasty aroma, with a little bit of sour and a light sweet kick. Better than the taste, but didn't wow me.

Taste has a touch of lemony sour, but a whole lot of bitter and straw-like flavors, without the complexity and sour I'm looking for. Finish is mildly bitter.

Mouthfeel is good. Light-bodied, plenty of carbonation.

An okay gueuze, but not my favorite. Generally dull, without much sour or depth, and dominated by the wrong flavors, IMO.

375ml corked and caged bottle served in my ST tulip. 24-06-2030 indicated on the back label. Pours a light, golden-orange hue with a slightly hazy clarity and a three inch bright white head that sizzles and pops and quickly disperses within seconds on the pour. Head eventually settles into a consistent 1/8th inch cap. Some lacing is present, but there's no adhesion. Nose reveals citrus zest, vinegar notes, cork and tart light stone fruit. Taste follows nose; however, considerably less tart and sour than suggested by the nose. There's also a slight cardboard taste in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively, palate cleansing carbonation as well as a slight acidity that lightly stimulates the salivary glands. Overall, a decent and accessible gueuze, but nothing overly spectacular. I'd go with Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René or Hanssens Oude Gueuze over this one.

This beer pours a clear, bubbly yellow with a thick head. The aroma is of lemons with a hint of sour grapes and a yeast mustiness. The flavor is purely sour grapes and nothing else. It's mouthfeel is light and fizzy, champagne like. Boon Oude Geuze is a good example of the style, just not for me. Not recommended!

Bottle. Best by September 16, 2030. Served at around 45F. My first Gueuze.

Pours hazy gold with an active three finger white head that dissipates quickly, but does hold a nice small cap and leaves some lacing behind.

Aroma is lemon zest/citrus, apples, hay, funk, dried grass, cheese?, hints of bubblegum. Good to very good strength.

Flavor features tart/sour lemon, acidic notes, apple cider notes, hay/grass/earth, along with some funk. I’m too much a novice in sours to pick apart the nuances of ’da funk’ but it’s there and for me, I find it to be fairly sour and pretty tasty. At times it does come across a bit watery (at least for what I expect in the style).

Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied, a bit sticky, scrubbing, active carbonation.

So...my first Gueuze...’bout damned time. I’ve had a few other Sours, but not a lot to compare to score-wise. I hear this is supposed to be a more mid-range Gueuze, yet I found this to be rather tart and sour and pretty good overall. Definitely has me wanting to try others in the style.

Poured in to a Corsendonk glass. Best Before 9/23/2030 bottle date.

The beer was a cloudy and translucent golden orange color. A big two finger fluffy head formed, but loudly fizzled out down in to a very thing layer of bubbles that settled on to the beer and formed a ring around the glass.

Tart and musty barnyard funky. Apples, wood, and grass. Very acidic.

Apples and lemon/citrus. Some oakiness. Reminds me of a dry white wine. Nice sour finish.

Incredibly dry and almost tannic. Very carbonated. Medium-light body and the sour finish lingered for a few moments before being whisped away.

Perfect amount of sourness and funk and clean finish. A very nice beer that I can't wait to have agains.
