What’s it Like to Work at Tucows?

Posted by Sarah Georges on November 13, 2012 No comments

Tucows Inc., Hover’s parent company, is one of the worlds most respected domain registrars. We were among the first group of thirty-four registrars to be accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 1999. With over 180 employees around the world (including offices in Toronto, Amsterdam and Starkville), Tucows has quite the unique culture. With so many different nationalities and personalities, there’s never a dull moment. Ever wondered what it’s like to work here?

Well, at Tucows…

…you never really know what to expect…
spacer

…every day is a little different than the last…
spacer
spacer

…there’s no shortage of personality…
spacer

…we have standing desks. ‘Nuff said…
spacer

…you can find a pair of these at every desk (two cows, get it?)…
spacer

…and these in the front lobby (catching on to the trend here?)…
spacer

…you can count on fresh fruit in the lunchroom at 2pm every day (must get there early for bananas)…
spacer

…we take our hot beverages very seriously…
spacer
spacer

…maybe a bit too seriously…
spacer

…staff events are anything but boring…
spacer
spacer
spacer

…we appreciate the fine arts..
spacer
spacer

…even our dogs are committed to the brand…
spacer
spacer

…and we’re always hard at work to make the customer experience better.

Hover’s Top 5 Blogging Platforms

Posted by Sarah Georges on November 6, 2012 No comments

Many people use their Hover domains to forward to a personal blog. Blogs are great if you want to keep loved ones up to date, share photos of a vacation, display hobbies or really anything else you can think of. Generally speaking, blogs are an inexpensive or free method of expressing yourself or getting your opinion across.

What blogging platform is the best for you? Here are some popular choices and what we like about them:

Tumblr

spacer Tumblr is great for those who want to show off a lot of pictures accompanied by short text posts. Think of it as a Twitter feed but with a more visual content. Perhaps you’re an aspiring photographer or want to document a trip without feeling the need to write long, formal posts. The Tumblr blogging platform is great for people on the go or with little time to spend online.
Price: Free

Squarespace

spacer Squarespace is great for the blogging newbies out there who may not be as familiar with design and coding techniques. The best part is you can use their themes but customize them to your own liking. The modular user interface means creating your own blog is as easy as choosing the pieces you want and putting them together.
Price: $8-$50 per month

WordPress

spacer A WordPress blog isn’t the simplest to set up. In fact, if you’re not familiar with finding and uploading themes, customizing plugins and creating a navigation structure, you may become overwhelmed and want to opt for a simpler platform. However, what it lacks in simplicity it makes up for in customizability. Once you get the hang of it, WordPress has a crazy amount of features, plugins and options that allow the user to fully tailor each aspect of their blog.
Price: Free hosting is available from WordPress.com. WordPress can also be installed and hosted on your own server space (hosting fees vary).

Posterous

spacer Posterous is so easy to use that you don’t even have to create an account to start posting. All you have to do to set up your blog is send your first post to post@posterous.com, and they’ll create YourName.Posterous.com for you! While it isn’t for anyone, Posterous email updating is perfect for those who want to blog on the go, or have little to no coding knowledge.
Price: Free

Twitter

spacer If you don’t have time to write full blog posts, let alone design a blog, Twitter may be for you. You can tweet from anywhere and instantly share content from the web to your followers. The only drawback is you must keep your posts at 140 characters or less.

ccTLD of the Week: .CA

Posted by Sarah Georges on November 1, 2012 No comments

Nothing says Canadian like .CA!

.CA is the ccTLD for Canada introduced in 1987 and managed by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). There are currently nearly 2 million .CA domain names registered.

Why .CA?

1. .CA domains are safe, secure and trusted. In fact, .CA domains are kept in an independent national registry.
2. Canadian internet users prefer a .CA for banking, education, shopping and current events.
3. This extension is reserved for Canadians only, so it is an excellent way for a Canadian individual or company to stand out among the mass of .COMs.
spacer

Who can register a .CA?

Any c\Canadian citizens, permanent residents in Canada, legal representative of a citizen or permanent resident or Canadian corporation under Canadian law can register a .CA domain name.

A .CA domain from Hover is only $15/year, including WHOIS privacy, unlimited domain forwarding, powerful domain editing and advanced DNS management!

ccTLD of the Week: .TV

Posted by Sarah Georges on October 23, 2012 No comments

spacer .TV is an interesting ccTLD. Originally, it was the extension for the country of Tuvalu. If you’re thinking: where in the world is Tuvalu? It sounds like its a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or something... you’re pretty much dead-on. Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located about midway between Australia and Hawaii and has a population of roughly 10,500.
Unfortunately for the island of Tuvalu, the .TV domain is more widely used these days for sites with video or other rich media like animation, audio or streaming content. This ccTLD is now operated by Verisign and anyone can register one.

Why Register a .TV?

A .TV domain name provides:

1. Instant association with video and rich media content.
2. greater chance of securing the domain name of your choice.
3. A distinct, memorable web address.
4. The perfect complement to a .com or .net web site.

.TV domains are just $40/year with Hover and registration is open to everyone!

TLD of the Week: .ASIA

Posted by Sarah Georges on October 15, 2012 No comments

spacer You may not know this (or you may already know, but humor us here) but Asia has over 60% of the world’s population. That equals approximately 4,243,200,000 people and counting! If you’re wondering if theres a domain extension that encompasses this very large and ever-expanding population, the answer to that question is yes.

The .ASIA domains are targeted towards companies, organizations, and individuals in the Pan-Asia and Asia-Pacific region. .ASIA is specifically focused on the Asia identity, but is versatile enough that it can be used by businesses, organizations, or individuals across the region. In addition to being popular for regional companies.it can also be adopted by international NGOs operating in Asia or global companies expanding into Asian markets.

“Legal entities” in the Pan-Asia and Asia-Pacific region can register for a .ASIA domain. A legal entity is considered an association, corporation, partnership, proprietorship, trust, or individual that has legal standing in the eyes of law.

.ASIA domains with Hover are just $20. Head on over to www.Hover.com. If you have any questions on the requirements to register a .ASIA domain, give us a call at 1-866-731-6556 or send us an email at help@hover.com
