Setting up an I/O server

spacer I/O stands for "Instant Outline"

spacer For a backgrounder on Instant Outlining, see this post by Hutch Carpenter written in 2009.

spacer Setting up new I/O server

spacer Every OPML Server installation can be an I/O server.

spacer It must be accessible over the net, of course, to all the workstations that are going to connect to it.

spacer Map a domain to the server, something like io.myserver.org.

spacer On the server

spacer Set io.thread.enabled to true.

spacer Set config.io.server.prefs.enabled to true.

spacer Set realtimedata.server.prefs.enabled to true.

spacer Create a new table for each user in config.io.server.users. You don't have to fill in any of the values, this will be done automatically by the thread script you enabled in a previous step. It might take up to a minute for this to happen.

spacer After the table is set up for each user, you may want to change the password, or note the password that's automatically generated. Send the username and password to each user via email or IM or some other means. Also send them a pointer to the workstation setup notes below.

spacer On each workstation

spacer Choose Preferences from the Misc menu.

spacer Under Web Services, you should see a section for Instant Outliner. Go there.

spacer Fill in the username and password as set on the server. Change the server to correspond to your server.

spacer Bring the OPML Editor app to the front.

spacer Choose Open My Outline from the Instant Outline sub-menu of the Outliner menu.

spacer Make sure that config.io.client.prefs.enabled is true.

spacer From there you should be able to start I/Oing.
