I/O stands for "Instant Outline"
For a backgrounder on Instant Outlining, see this post by Hutch Carpenter written in 2009.
Setting up new I/O server
Every OPML Server installation can be an I/O server.
It must be accessible over the net, of course, to all the workstations that are going to connect to it.
Map a domain to the server, something like io.myserver.org.
On the server
Set io.thread.enabled to true.
Set config.io.server.prefs.enabled to true.
Set realtimedata.server.prefs.enabled to true.
Create a new table for each user in config.io.server.users. You don't have to fill in any of the values, this will be done automatically by the thread script you enabled in a previous step. It might take up to a minute for this to happen.
After the table is set up for each user, you may want to change the password, or note the password that's automatically generated. Send the username and password to each user via email or IM or some other means. Also send them a pointer to the workstation setup notes below.
On each workstation
Choose Preferences from the Misc menu.
Under Web Services, you should see a section for Instant Outliner. Go there.
Fill in the username and password as set on the server. Change the server to correspond to your server.
Bring the OPML Editor app to the front.
Choose Open My Outline from the Instant Outline sub-menu of the Outliner menu.
Make sure that config.io.client.prefs.enabled is true.
From there you should be able to start I/Oing.
