Trentemøller and me

spacer

I stuck Trentemøller in the same room as Magnetosphere and they made a beautiful 4 minute long movie. Links at the end of this post.

spacer

As you might have noticed, I have been getting acquainted to additive blending, courtesy of OpenGL. It really fills the space with light. I was a bit worried that I would get addicted to it like I did the Photoshop lens-flare back in the late 90s, but here is why this is different from that.

spacer

The first time I tried to render a bunch of semi-transparent objects in a 3D space, I ran into a problem that I had not considered. Rendering with OpenGL and transparency requires that you render the far stuff first and the near stuff last. If you just render the objects in the order you made them (which is often the case with me and my addiction to ArrayLists), you will end up with odd inconsistencies with the transparencies. And unless you want to get involved with the headache of z-axis sorting, you would do what I usually do. Give up.

spacer

The beauty of additive blending, or so is my understanding, and here I will extend this sentence into a horribly long run-on by saying I am no OpenGL master in any sense of the word… no… more I am a beginner who is getting a lot of use out of a few lines of code that I read a short tutorial about or saw in use, etc… so there might be an easier way to deal with the z-sorting issue but I choose to assume for now that this is the best way to go about it because just LOOK at the results!!! spacer So, as I was saying, the beauty is that I no longer have to worry about z-sorting. The additive blending bit handles all the z-axis headaches and gets me additive blending as a bonus! Sweet light!

spacer

Another thing I am starting to implement here is something that came about as a side effect from the video about using the Lemur. I was filming my laptop monitor with a Canon powershot and I didnt have the laptop monitor tilted to an angle perpendicular to the camera’s line of sight. It was tilted away a bit and it ended up adding a nice subtle gradient to the background fill which seemed to help the overall look of the piece.

So, what I ended up doing was rendering to LARGE gradient orbs in the background centered offscreen but extending into the screen. Their position rotates in the opposite direction as the camera’s rotation in the space. It seems to add quite a bit of depth and atmosphere.

Yes, additive blend mode (6 1) is very very nice. I use it quite often. Its the shit. This stuff is looking lovely, really lovely.

question on the side: Are you using Sonia, ESS, or OpenAL ?

  3. flight404 Says:

I use Sonia for this stuff. I used ESS for a while when jSyn took their time making an intel Mac supported plugin, but everybody seems to be up to date, so back to Sonia I go. Its the one I am most familiar with. I might eventually look into OpenAL, but I am having enough of a hard time getting along with OpenGL… AL is going to have to wait.

I am overwhelmed, this looks fantastic.
I fear it won’t be long until some big advertising company will want this for their next campaign (generative graphics are gaining ground in industry, see the recent Audi clip here stashmedia.tv/feed/audi60.mov).

How do you make the particle trails?

    Hi there,

wow you got me all impressed with this one. Looks tremendous sensible and has a huge portion of magic to it. Youre the new Ribbon-God for my part I’d say.
One question: youre saying you were filming your laptopscreen with your cam – is that saying that all the rendering is 100% live? You code directly in OpenGL I assume?

Andreas: Great clip and good point. Its rare for advertising clients to venture into the obscure realm of eye-candy to sell product, but I applaud it. Any idea why it didnt resolve into the Audi logo? I would have had no idea what brand it was without seeing the URL. The particle trails are fairly simple. I keep track of each particle’s last 15 to 25 x,y, and z positions and span them with a QUAD_STRIP. To make it even more organic, I add a percentage of each position’s x,y, and z velocity to those trail points to make them drift a bit.

Majman: Let me work on that. In the meantime, check my flickr page for some that I made already.

Manuel: Thanks for the kind words. Its true, I have been filming a projection for a lot of these videos, but this one is an actual render in that I am saving a image for each frame i show and piecing those images together in Quicktime and pasting back in the audio. I should probably blog that process as well because I get a lot of questions about it. So this one is not live. But, it was developed as a live project… the live version runs smoothly with about 150 particles but for this render, I cranked it up to 500 particles so it ended up dropping to about 2 to 5 frames per second.

andre: Thanks! I am really really happy with how it turned out. So much more to try!

I don’t have much to add to the other comments, but really, really nice. I think it is so great to see a work made in processing, that doesn’t look like it was made in processing, and all without a single keyframe.

Maybe its true, the post render age is approaching.

[...] Could we draw a similar parallel with generative art? I’m thinking mainly of the lush, maximalist strain pursued by artists such as Robert Hodgin and Marius Watz – but perhaps more generally as well. On the surface at least there are some similarities. These works are all about sensory pleasure – especially audio/visual interplay, which links up to the embodied pleasure “networks” of the club environment (eg Watz’ Illuminations for club Transmediale (below)). Definitely neo-baroque. Visual density and complexity is another hallmark; like Pozzo’s ceiling these are immersive, teeming spatial fields. What about reflexivity? This scene is marked by the artists’ open interests (and pleasure) in technique; and its aesthetics are also displays of both construction and skill. This is 3D that is quite happy to look like 3D (unlike some of the more imperceptible Hollywood fx). Yet some features of generative art don’t seem neo-baroque by Ndalianis’ formulation. Illusion, a clear link between baroque painting and digital cinema, doesn’t feature in generative art – unless we consider the toy worlds of (for eg) Magnetosphere as a kind of illusion without an original; if Hollwood persists in stitching the constructed into the photographic “real”, maybe generative art (along with gaming) has crossed over into pure simulation?
