A Case Study on Digital Empowerment Foundation's Chanderiyaan Project by IRMA, IIM Calcutta

spacer Using the context of market development at BOP, we have studied the Digital Empowerment Foundation's Chanderiyaan Project as a case study to understand how the project has been able to reduce the four market separations to develop market for Chanderi weavers in Handloom products. We used a case study approach to understand DEF's Chanderiyaan initiative. Our methodology primarily involved collecting and analyzing secondary data, followed by site visit/s to Chanderi, and conducting in-depth interviews of weavers, master weavers, customers, and employees of DEF, along with non-participant observations. DEF helping a Dalit handwritten paper jounalist in Dumka

Amidst all the tall talks of a possible Constitutional amendment to facilitate reservations for Dalits in getting ahead in life, a New Delhi based NGO, Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), has recently found out a unique journalist. He is now a 70-year-old dalit man. His name is Mr. Gouri Shankar Rajak (washerman by caste) who has been carrying out a handwritten weekly newspaper in his native Dumka, Jharkhand, India for the last 24 years. All the activities associated with the bringing out of the newspaper was carried out by this man alone, such was his passion for work. Now he has leprosy and hence can't work. Read more >>

DEF's Petition to forego the spectrum fee altogether for running community radio stations

spacer Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) has urged the National Advisory Council, Govt. to forgo the spectrum license fee altogether for community radio stations, run by non-profit organisations. In its petition, DEF has requested the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications & IT to forego the five-fold increase (from Rs 19,700 to Rs 91,000) in license fee for community radio. spacer The Inauguration of the Digital Panchayat Centre was held at the Office Premises of Mahalir Munnetra Sangam (MMS) at Chinnamanur on 28th June 2012. Impact sourcing should be less based on employment generation and more about using naturally existing resources to create impact on the local economy. But what is impact sourcing? Out of 42 million population of Kenya, 25 million carry mobile phones and 12 million of them use it to access the Internet. Kenya is also known for several innovations including m-Pesa, which is a mobile-based payment system. There are 17 million m-Pesa account holders, making it the most trusted and used platform for all kinds of money transfers. It is believed that the reason for the success of m-Pesa is because carrying cash in Kenya is risky. Read more >>
