The San Francisco VA Epilepsy Center was established in 1997 to provide specialized care to veterans suffering from seizures.  Since that time, the Epilepsy Center has continued to grow and flourish, providing more advanced care to greater numbers of patients in Northern California and throughout the entire nation.  In 2002, the Center was named as one of four national centers of excellence, and in 2008, was officially designated as a regional Epilepsy Center of Excellence through a congressional act.

Together with our colleagues at VA medical centers in Los Angeles, Houston, and Albuquerque, we seek to provide the best possible epilepsy care to veterans throughout the southwestern region of the United States.  Our goal is to deliver the highest quality of ongoing medical care to veterans suffering from epilepsy.  We also seek to promote outreach and educational efforts for both patients and their physicians in order to further the understanding of this chronic condition.

At our San Francisco Center, we offer a range of services in both the outpatient and inpatient realms.  We hold weekly outpatient epilepsy clinics with a staff of three neurology specialists.  From these clinics, patients can be directed to the most advanced testing methods for the evaluation of epilepsy, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and video monitoring.  For those patients that require more intensive testing or attention, we also run an inpatient unit for examining certain seizure types more closely or changing medications in a monitored setting.

If you are a veteran with seizures and are interested in visiting our Epilepsy Center in San Francisco, please communicate with your local primary care physician.  This doctor will be able to determine if you might benefit from visiting us, and can help set up a visit.  If you are already a patient at our center, you may call our hotline at 415-379-5599.
