About CRISP
For the past several years, volunteers all over Phuket have been logging their international Internet speeds using a replicable speed testing method and site. Starting in June, 2011, we moved the testing over to the DSLReports.com speed test site, measuring speeds to Los Angeles. The move was necessary to minimize the effect of Web caching, a technique that speeds up internet access in general, but masks the actual international access speeds.
Note that the speeds we're logging are international downloads and uploads. The effective speed that you will see depends on many factors, particularly the location of the site you're visiting and whether the site (or parts of the site) has been cached inside Thailand. If you're browsing to many different sites, other factors come into play, including the efficiency of the Internet Service Provider's Domain Name Server. If you're running a torrent, the sources of the data can come from anywhere, locally or internationally, so international speeds only tell part of the story.
The numbers are available for anyone to use in any way they like: click the "Download" link above and you'll get an Excel-ready CSV data file. If you forward, publish, or show other people the numbers, I only ask that you credit www.KhunWoody.com, the main doorway to this database and my bakery and Sandwich Shoppes.
Registration and login are not required before you can view, search, and download our speed reports. However, you must register/login to report Internet speeds.
In the past, the database has been analyzed by Internet Service Providers and government organizations to see how well Phuket stacks up in the Internet speed wars, and how service can be improved. The numbers have also been used by angry customers to document problems with their ISPs. Most importantly, people in Phuket use them to try to figure out which Internet service would be best for them - a question that's not easily answered.
I maintain this database on KhunWoody.com as a public service, compliments of my Sandwich Shoppes. The site was originally developed by Henry Habermacher for Phuket's weekly Computer Clinics, with an assist from X-Net Computer company in Phuket Town. It has since been redesigned by "KhunWoody.com" webmeister-extraordinaire Seth Bareiss and redeveloped and extended by programming ace David Weinraub, owner of PapayaSoft, Phuket website development company.
