Hong Kong’s vanity plates have been making headlines around the world recently. We've all seen them, pointed, laughed, and maybe even snapped a photo or two. But what does it take to get a personalized license plate on your car?
Vanity plates, better known locally as personalized vehicle registration marks (PVRM), are auctioned at the starting price of HK$5000, and first became available in 2006. Applications for specific plates are accepted in January, May and September of each year, and a refundable deposit of $5000 is required with each application. Call 2804 2600 to determine if your dream plates are still available, and check that they comply with regulations.
The personalized license plate is made up of a maximum of eight letters, with no more than four of the same letter or number consecutively. ‘I’, ‘O’, and ‘Q’ are not permitted to be used (‘I’ and ‘O’ are considered 1 and 0 respectively), but blank spaces are. No more than one consecutive blank space is allowed, and each blank used is considered one of the eight letters or numerals.
