The folks from IDT promise you much lower rates and "green energy" if you switch to them from ConEd. However, you learn they are much more expensive once you get the bill.

They are reportedly knocking on doors in Crown Heights this weekend; don't fall for it!

They've also been calling me (evidently from call centers in India, based on the assortment of accents) for over a year now.

i've called the cops on them before; what they're doing falls under the guise of harrassment, fair and square. now i just ask where they're from, and slam the door once they get to "D."

they been going around for a long while now, always trying to con me or my tenants letting them in and talk about it. I"m like not interested etc... lol but some of them insist they are the part of con ed or whom ever and will save me money. only if I let them in and see my bill.

I had a screaming fit on them a few weeks ago. My very large neighbor had to come out to tell him to leave while the guy responded to my threats of calling the cops that "they're fine with them."

I insisted that they were trespassing so that was actually not fine. Sad realization was knowing that if I did call the cops nothing would happen.

Best to take those out on people who don't live with you. Do you have any reason to call Cablevision or a credit card company? spacer I discovered Target.com is a terrible place to register, but not a bad place to call and harass.

I also got into a huge, accusatory discussion on this site about "prostitute looking ladies" that wasn't helpful to anyone. I could have gone on forever, but realized eventually it was best to just back away slowly. spacer

It sounds like you were the perfect person to start wildly screaming at them. You could rent yourself out to people who don't have that kind of gumption in the face of their pushy demands to see your ConEd bill. I've always scoffed heavily and slammed the door at that stage. What actually happens when/if you show them the bill?

Allegations are that they write down your account number, and then enroll you without your consent.

They are in Kensington as well! The guy who came to my apartment was so casual when he asked to see my bill... I told him I don't have it. This particular person just happen to "run out" of business cards while he explained this new, "amazing" obama backed program to me... etc. etc.

The more questions I asked, the sketchier it got. He insisted that I give him my phone number and account number so a "representative" will give me a call and confirm my identity... Why the hell would I give him my info if he couldn't even give me a website to check it out for myself?

They were just here on St. Marks and Nostrand. A young girl came to the door and told me she was "Officer Jones" and asked me to please get a copy of my Gas & Elec bill. I told her
"No thanks and what you're doing is a scam". She yelled down the hall for her "manager". This large guy comes shuffling down and asks me what the problem was. I told him that what he's doing is illegal and to please not come back"..(second time they've come around). He got ultra aggressive and told me his laminate on the lanyard was state issued and that it's law that they inform me of some discounts. He was incredibly hostile in body language. I shut and locked the door. I heard him say "I'm sticking around". Not exactly sure what he meant by that...I've got a nice bat next to the door.

This scam will continue until no one falls for for it.

Note, "no one falling for it" is completely unrelated to how many people threaten to call the police.

Sounds like the same girl who came here a few weeks ago. Flashed an ID badge and said something like "electric & gas" as she tried to push her way in!

I just laughed and slammed the door in her face.

That proho con artist guy ("Gaffler") should get a job with IDT Energy. That would be a classic mashup:

"Excuse me! I'm just trying to get back to my page job at NBC in the city. My mother had a stroke and crashed her car. I just need six dollars. May I explain how IDT Energy can save you money on your Con Edison bill?"

The bastards have been in my building twice in the past week and just now they sent a really rude ass. He was shockingly younger, and wouldn't stop his spiel when I told him two others had already came by and I wasn't interested and he barked back that that was why he was there because they hadn't done their jobs. He kept going so I repeated that I wasn't interested and shut the (chained) door. As soon as I walked away he hit the doorbell again out of what I can only assume was spite. I then called the Super, who is much more intimidating than I am or my 17lb dog.

When he first came to the door he said he was the gas and electric agent. I told him through the door he had to talk to the super. He insisted no, he was there to make sure I got my energy rebate check.

      Now I'm all pissed.

UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE WITH IDT THIS WEEK.

For reference, I made the mistake of signing up with IDT last year and cancelled when my supply charges shot up 60% during the summer. Then I googled it and found out about the scam. This is my first real post here, but I had to tell everyone what has happened to me in the past week. These people are unbelievable and DO NOT GIVE UP.

First, last week a kid comes to the door, expecting a package I open it. Seeing his lanyard, I ask if he's with a ESCO. He says yes and as I slam the door in his face, he DIVES at the door and almost gets a hand on the door as I'm slamming it shut. Then he cons my neighbor across the hall into the service while loudly complaining about how rude I was. I told her the next day about the scam and she was almost in tears until I explained how to freeze her service and revert to ConEd.

So yesterday someone comes to my door, a nice sounding really young girl with IDT Energy. I just calmly explain how it's a giant scam, it sent my bill through the roof, she's working for scam artists, she should leave the building, and everyone knows it's a scam. When I'm was done, she looked at me all doe-eyed and asked 'should I quit my job??'. I felt bad cause she's just trying to survive, but she was obviously new to it and didn't really know what she was doing. Right after she says that her much older 'supervisor' or whatever comes bounding down the stairs and gets right in my face aggressively and starts denying EVERYTHING I said - that my bill can only go down, it's green energy, I'm lying, all that. I call him out, them them to get out of the building, and just laughed at his denials. I thought that would be the last I see of these jokers.

So my phone rings today. It's IDT Energy. The rep identifies himself as "the energy supplier for Con Edison." He refuses to give me his full name, or any further identifying info for himself or his company. He tells me that the billing I had received was with ANOTHER IDT Energy in NJ, as were the people at my door. He was with IDT Energy in PA!!! He says they don't ever do door-to-door and only over the phone. He first says that (obviously knowing what was said the other day) in fact I cancelled before I got my year-end discount!! I laugh and tell him the actual supply rates I was charged during the summer. THEN he says 'no, that's not us. That was IDT in NJ, they switched you from us. We don't do that. We're 2 cents.' He basically gives me the same denials I got from the other guy the other day. So I ask him how he knows about the conversation we had if he works for another company in PA. He then pretends that he didn't know anything about the conversation, even though he had a list of my specific objections and counters to all of them. It just goes on from there. He won't give up, and flat-out denies everything I said. I was openly laughing by the end. But the guy did not give up, and was clearly willing to say anything to close a sale. I just kept calling him out, referred to all the online complaints, and hung up.

I am kinda worried that this is a coordinated effort to intimidate people, and clearly the manager in my building who got in my face tracked my info and decided to harass me over the phone, as it even sounded like the same person. I haven't heard back since, but watch out people.

We got scammed by this, back when we lived in Bed Stuy. I called Con Ed, and had them undo it (which was super easy, luckily). This is a terrible nasty scam.

These guys are back in action tonight...Sterling Place near Butler. Showed their trademark resistance when told to leave the building (but eventually did, after a lot of backtalk).
