About the Cranky Professor

I’m a medievalist, an associate professor of the history of art and architecture at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. I blog about art, architecture, the Middle Ages, the classical world, higher education, lower education, current events, and the stuff people in Great Britain find with metal detectors.

My opinions are my own, and should not reflect on my institution.

Dear Cranky, I have been a reader of Instapundit for a long time and just searched through his link list and found your fascinating blog. I have a slight connection to your world due to my birth in Geneva in 1948. My father was an architect (White & Helm) with his office across from the small park on Main St. We moved to Los Angeles when I was 7 and I have only been back to Geneva twice since then, but I have fond childhood memories of upstate New York. I did all my academic work in California at Claremont McKenna, Stanford and Cal Berkeley and I still live and work in Southern California. I have a great interest in history, antiquities and many of your other blog subjects. I also like the photos of Geneva. One of my recent interests has been the history my early ancestors in New York state. My eighth grandfather (Pieter Helm) arrived in New York as a boy in 1710 as a part of the Palatine Emigration. He settled in what is now Wurtsboro, NY and the family lived around that area for many generations. I hope to make a trip to New York in a year of two to explore his roots and make another stop in Geneva. I look forward to becoming a regular reader of your blog.
