Fellow Hoosiers,

It has been a privilege to serve as your State Superintendent of Public Instruction over the past three-plus years. My work as a father, husband, science teacher, basketball coach, principal and local school superintendent has given me the background and personal experience necessary to understand the successes and challenges our children and educators face on a daily basis.

Since my very first day on the job in 2009, I’ve kept a scoreboard outside my office that tracks the academic progress of Hoosier students compared to their national and global peers. Keeping score focuses us on the importance of ensuring Indiana students graduate from high school ready to enter a competitive 21st century workforce. The scoreboard includes high school graduation rates, the percentage of students who pass the state’s Math and English assessments as well as the number of students receiving advanced credit(s) during their high school years.

You can be proud of parents and educators across Indiana who’ve helped improve our academic culture. Currently, 85.7% of Indiana’s students are graduating from high school, and after seeing record gains last year, Indiana’s students increased their state assessment scores for the third year running with 71% passing both the Math and English portions of the exams. Our advanced credit gains are also on the rise as we have seen a 3.5% increase since 2008, in the number of students passing Advance Placement exams, earning Indiana a pass rate of 13.4%. We’re also leading the nation in providing minority students access to these important classes. While it could be tempting to declare ‘mission accomplished,’ make no mistake, we have much more work to do on behalf of our students. Nothing but the best is acceptable for Hoosier children.

During the past three years we’ve seen big changes in our state’s education system. If you have questions on these or any other matters please feel free to contact me at superintendent@doe.in.gov. It is my sincere hope that together we continue to make the necessary improvements that are so critical to improving the lives of students.

Sincerely,
