Latin Grammar for the Grammar Stage

First Form’s grammar-first approach focuses on grammar forms and vocabulary because these are the skills suitable for the grammar stage student. The First Form Series is for students of all ages because all beginners—regardless of age—are in the grammar stage of learning. Syntax (how to use the grammar) and translation are logic and rhetoric stage skills, respectively, and quickly overwhelm the student unless they are introduced at a slow, gentle pace and taught for mastery. First Form is the ideal text for all beginners, grades 5 & up, or is a great follow-up to Latina Christiana I at any age. Now every school and homeschool can have a truly successful Latin program that creates Latin scholars rather than Latin drop-outs.

Based on twenty years of teaching experience, this revolutionary "grammar-first" series will be your guide as you and your students successfully climb the mountain of Latin Grammar all the way to the top! The uniqueness of the First Form Series lies in two features:

  1. It is committed to the trivium model of teaching grammar systematically in order to facilitate retention and understanding, rather than topically, to facilitate translation.
  2. Extensive workbook exercises ensure skills mastery and rapid recognition of inflected forms.

First Form mastery:

  • the six indicative active tenses of the first two verb conjugations
  • five noun declensions
  • first and second declension adjectives
  • 185 vocabulary words.

Other features include:

  • Designed for students and teachers with no Latin background
  • 8x8 inch Student Text, small, concise, unintimidating with 34 two-page lessons on facing uncluttered pages
  • Limited vocabulary of 185 words
  • Full-size Student Workbook with 4-6 pages of exercises per lesson
  • Vocabulary derivatives and detailed explanations of Latin sayings
  • Grammar catechism for daily rapid-fire review
  • Milestone markers for each grammar objective
  • Everything-you-could-possibly-need teacher manual
    • Organized for easy access
    • Student Text inset with answers in color
    • Chalk-talk scripted lessons
    • Recitation schedule
    • Pronunciation reminders
    • Workbook with key
    • Unit tests and lesson quizzes booklet
    • FYI section for extra background
5 min DVD demo (Lesson 8)

Frequently Asked Questions
top of page
  • I finished Latina Christiana I. Should I go on to First Form or Latina Christiana II?
If you plan to continue your Latin studies for several years, we recommend First Form after Latina Christiana I. First Form contains just the right amount of review and will provide a four-year course (First, Second, Third, Fourth Forms) to tie directly into Henle II.
  • I am in the middle of Latina Christiana II. Should I switch to First Form?
Typically no. Finish Latina Christiana II and then move to Second Form Latin. You will need a bridge unit which can be ordered by calling Memoria Press at 1-877-862-1097.
  • I just started Henle I. Should I switch to First Form?
If you are having success with Henle I, stick with it. Henle is a great program. If your child needs more thorough explanation or a slower pace, First Form is for you.

""FYI, This DVD is worth 10X the actual price. I have learned more Latin in only 21 lessons of FF/DVD combo than in 7 years of going it alone with 5-6 other Latin programs... It is rare that curriculum boasts are even close to reality. In the case of FF, they are understated. Huge Fan!" - Jen in Japan

Bravo, Memoria Press, for First Form Latin!! I had to write to tell you how wonderful your program is.  We have used Prima Latina, Latina Christiana I, and Latina Christiana II all with success (and we enjoyed them too), but First Form is by far our favorite.  The perfectly logical, systematic approach to the material is excellent as are the workbook, text, and teacher’s manuals.  Glen Moore does an outstanding job of teaching – he clearly knows his stuff and enjoys it.  We have so enjoyed the way that he presents the material with humor and inspiration….gotta love a Latin teacher that grabs the kids’ attention and holds it throughout.  My kids all wish they could take from him live and in person! ;) So, thank you, Mrs. Lowe and Memoria Press for your excellent program.  My kids have gone from hesitant to happy Latin students.  We look forward to the rest of the “Form” series.  - Karen

"I can't tell you how much I am enjoying this new curriculum! It is so systematic, easy to use, and it ensures the success of the students which boosts their confidence. They end up loving Latin as opposed to dreading it! I have used Latina Christiana for 10 years very successfully, and I love it for younger students. But First Form is a wonderful addition to the Latin curricula world. I am eager to continue with it in the future. My students just finished Units 1 & 2 and know the six tenses inside and out! I have high schools students that I tutor that are nowhere close to my students' ability to conjugate verbs!" - S. Strickland

As my eighth grade son is wrapping up First Form Latin, I was reviewing Henle, thinking it would be our next course, as I had done some of Henle myself.  But after doing First Form, I must admit to being spoiled.  Ms. Lowe has made this curriculum so clear and easy to follow and has included so many helps in the back of the book that I can't see us doing anything else. The workbook makes sure my son solidifies the material and the teacher's manual gives me the confidence of a seasoned Latin teacher.  I have another eighth grade son well into another program, Familia Romana, as he is a more abstract thinker, and we have to work 2-3 times as hard to organize our thinking so we can understand all the reading. I have also worked through about 1/4 of Wheelock and Latin for the New Millenium and would still vote for First Form. Thank you so much and keep up the great work and service you are giving to all of us homeschoolers in all of your curriculum offerings! - MP Forum Post

I am teaching First Form for the second time in a classical school. I have also taught Henle. The Memoria Press Henle guides are excellent, and I love the text, but it is much easier to teach First Form. The lesson plans, grammar rule appendix, vocabulary drills, and oral drills are very helpful. If a student gets behind it is easy to give him a game plan to get caught up since the support material is so accessible.
It is a such pleasure to teach such a well-organized program. Cheryl Lowe, thank you! - MP Forum Post

"My guys are amazed that the Student Text is so small - they feel like the work is presented in bite-sized pieces that they can take in - there is not too much information presented at one time. ... As I said, I was quite reluctant to change programmes, but I'm glad I did! It is well laid out, presents the information in bite-sized pieces, has a good amount of review and worksheets for each lesson, and explains the grammar and information very well. I think it fits perfectly with the motto as on the cover: 'Docere, Delectare, Movere.'" Linda in Australia

"I am also beta testing First Form Latin, the new middle school Latin program from Memoria Press. It is fabulous. It covers the material of Henle I in a much more systematic way and has lots of drill to master that grammar. The layout is also superior to Henle and will be easier for younger kids. ... It really is an awesome program." Angelina in Louisiana

"We have been enjoying the journey through Latina Christiana I & II and First Form and are looking forward to going through all the Forms using your excellent materials. I investigated several other programs and none were intuitive enough. The DVDs, the games, the songs, the saying, the focus on grammar with less vocabulary, all make it so much easier to teach and learn. Latin is now fun! Thank you so much for developing these courses." - Rez, First Form Group

"I just want to say that Mr. Moore is VERY popular at my house.  We use the DVD's, and my son has really responded to Mr. Moore's teaching style.  I also took the First Form teacher's class last summer with Mr. Moore.  I enjoyed the class a great deal, and it was very helpful to me." - Martha

"I had to share this comment with you. I am a homeschooling mother trying to teach 3 of my children Latin using First Form. I will admit that I have no former Latin training, and I struggle GREATLY with any foreign language. Today, I read, taught myself, and introduced Unit III (and Lesson XIV) to my children. The explanations for these concepts, including the appendix pages were AWESOME! I clearly understood everything (including declensions) and successfully explained it to my sons.... Thank you for making this easy and understandable. I may be able to "get" Latin after all! - Carol

I used First Form for my 4th grader last year and she did not have any trouble with it. She really liked it because it was so clear and well organized.... I hope you like it as much as we did. - Eve

"Glen Moore's delightful sense of humor (in the DVDs) permeates his clear, systematic presentation of the First Form Latin lessons. His optimistic approach to Latin, using a variety of visual techniques, helps cement the Latin grammar in kids' brains. Thanks to Mr. Moore's distinctive teaching style, combined with unrivaled curriculum, I am confident that superabimus Latina!" - Peggy Arnold

"I tend to want to trust Memoria Press most in all of this simply because I think they have excellent materials and because they provide very cogent articles in support of their position. They seem to be running a very successful school as well." - Brian G.

"We really do like the First Form.  It covers the material well and is easy to follow.  The grammar is presented in a way that helps the students understand what they have covered and the direction they are heading."   - Kathryn

"This is a wonderful course and a FAVORITE under this apple tree!  Very well constructed and organized.  This is curriculum is for grades 5 and up.  You need no previous Latin instruction to teach this course.  How great is that?  A hallmark of a classical education is taking Latin.  I was a bit intimidated when I decided to take on this task.  However, Memoria Press made it easy for both teacher and student to begin Latin."   - Richelle, Under The Apple Tree

"First form Latin is arranged much more the way *I* would wish to learn Latin. It's grammar-centric."
- Tabitha
