« Oscar Betting How’s That NEA Working Out? »
The Decline of Western CultureI mentioned a while back that I had purchased The Complete New Yorker on DVD-Rom (see? I’m a well-rounded individual – honest!). Being the completist that I am (some might say complete fool), I’m reading ‘em all, cover to cover, in order – starting at the beginning, 1925, when even the New Yorker folks say it wasn’t very good (needless to say, I’ll finish reading them all in about, oh, 2038, I believe – if they never published another issue). So, thrilling, you say – thanks for that (yawn!) look inside your exciting life. Well, I do have a point – nightlife in this country has gone way, way down. This is from the About Town listings for a single week in March, 1925 (in the middle of Prohibition, to boot!) – just look at who you could have seen: Al Jolson at the Winter Garden in the play Big Boy …and, of course, tons of other stuff starring people that this ol’ Texas boy has never heard of (and that seemed to be just an average week in New York in those days). All that, and bootleg liquor, too!…and, of course, the Jazz Age was just beginning… Ever get the feeling you were born in the wrong era?… March 1st, 2006 | Category: Celebrities / Pop Culture / Sports |
