While I am not a practitioner of tarot, I am most certainly a fan of anything related to Lovecraft and the mythos. When Scott Lambridis of Omnibucket contacted me about reviewing their latest release, ‘Brainchild: A Collection of Artifacts’, I was not sure what to expect from a zombie-themed anthology. The idea of zombies, or the undead, has been around for a very long time. A huge part of their modern-day popularity is of course due to the work of filmmaker George Romero, creator of ‘Night of the Living Dead’. I was particularly struck by a quote in the included press release, which I think sums up these underrated villains nicely - “They aren’t afraid of running water, aren’t affected by moonlight or sunlight, or silver bullets. They are rotting corpses, and they’re coming for you. [...] They don’t become one with nature - they don’t live forever - they just slowly fall apart, and if given the change, they’ll eat you alive before they do.” Read on for my review. Read »

A while back, Ruptured Silence Records sent me a promo kit for the latest album from the Chemnitz, Germany based death metal band Philosopher. I am always eager to hear new music, especially when it comes from a band which cites H. P. Lovecraft as a heavy influence. Read »

One thing that struck me as I listened to this lot was Thin Lizzy. In fact it was Thin Lizzy playing stoner rock very well. There are times when Eli Eckhert sounds like he is chanelling Phil Lynott. This is not a bad thing however; helping this CD to be quite a good listen. Unlike so many bands trying to ape QOTSA and the “desert sound” this bunch have brought some much needed originality to the murky depths of stoner rock. Read »

When I think of Japanese monsters, I tend to envision rubber-suited Kaiju fare, or Anime, with its big-eyed schoolgirls with even bigger guns blazing away at tentacled things with lots of eyes and mouths. And fun as they elements may be, they hardly suggest the lurking, brooding terrors of H. P. Lovecraft! Read »

As you can gather from the title this lot have written most of an album inspired by the mythos of HP Lovecraft. The last song “Torso,” is a short blast of pure gore metal, complete with a sound clip to kick it off. The rest is Slayer-esque black/death metal, delivered with speed and menace. Alas, the mastering of this CD is patchy and some of the music really gets lost in the mix. Read »

Yet another ambiant CD based on the works of HP Lovecraft. There seems to be a real glut of Cthulhu-inspired music at the moment. Guess the Great Old One is stiring again and affecting musician’s minds. He needs to try harder. This is an all instrumental album that I assume was done to accompany the reading (and for some of us writing) of mythos tales. Read »

The adventures of the Sage of Wales and his companions continue in this collection of tales by Andrew Ian Dodge. This 239 page book includes three short stories as well as a short novel by this noted Mythos inspired author.

This book has been chosen to kick off the new review section here at the Temple of Dagon. Andrew has been a part of the community here for a good while now and we are very proud to have him, as well as very excited for this release.
