NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA -- The SIU men's basketball team got out to a fast start to begin the Barry Hinson era, jumping out to leads of 11-0 and 26-6 in the first half on its way to a 72-55 win over New Orleans Monday night at Lakefront Arena.

The Salukis (1-0) led 42-26 at the half thanks to a career game from guard Jeff Early. The senior scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead all scorers.

The Dawgs pushed the advantage to as many as 24 points in the second half, before UNO (1-1) went on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 13. But SIU didn't allow the Privateers to get any closer.

The Salukis return to the court Saturday in their home opener against Benedictine University at Springfield, an NAIA school.
