The New Evangelical Agenda

By Jim Wallis

The biggest mistake the religious right made was to make the word “evangelical” a political term. Evangelical is a theological commitment, not a political one. It’s about the centrality of Christ and the authority of the Bible. ... There is a new evangelical agenda for a new evangelical demographic.

Catholic Bishops Push for Dorothy Day Canonization

The Catholic bishops gathered in Baltimore for their annual meeting couldn’t agree on a statement on the economy on Tuesday morning, but with a unanimous voice vote that afternoon they easily backed a measure to push sainthood for Dorothy Day, whose life and work were dedicated to championing the poor.

Bono Preaches the Gospel of Social Justice at Georgetown

I'm fairly certain none of the students present for Monday night's event, sponsored by the Bank of America and The Atlantic magazine, anticipated hearing Bono, the 52-year-old lead singer of U2, preach. But preach he did.

Smell. Sip. Sacrament.

Is it a moral, practical, or ethical choice to burn frankincense whilst roasting coffee beans by hand? Surely not. But, the Ethiopians seem to be saying (without words), it is necessary. Because who knows when we’ll be together again? So let’s honor the time we have together, bless it, mark it as sacred – a sacred meeting of souls.

Rock the 'Slut Vote'

A blog post written on the website of the Christian Men's Defense League — yes, an organization dedicated to protecting the rights of white American Christian men is apparently a thing — blames Mitt Romney's loss Tuesday night on what the author brilliantly coins "the slut vote."

On Scripture: Signs That the End is Near

This instinct to interpret current times through the broader lens of God’s judgment is not new. Examples appear throughout the Bible. For those who believe God’s Spirit does work in the world through signs and miracles, such tragedies can function as intellectual puzzles, but they should never stop us from responding with heart, head, and hands.

  • The Prerequisite of the Common Good
    by Jim Wallis
The results of the presidential election showed how dramatically a very diverse America is changing; people are longing for a vision of the common good that includes everyone. As one commentator put it “the demographic time bomb” has now been set off in American politics — and getting mostly white, male, and older voters is no longer enough to win election.

  • God Is Still Not A Republican, Or A Democrat
    by Jim Wallis, Wes Granberg-Michaelson
Our efforts appeared to inject some common sense into our nation’s political discourse, but given recent electoral statements and newspaper ads from some conservative Christian leaders, it appears the message bears repeating — God is still not a Republican or Democrat.

  • Pay Attention: An Afternoon with Billy Collins and Mary Oliver
    by Brandon Hook
Perhaps the most important take away from the evening came from Oliver during a question and answer time after the readings. She said something like this: “Pay attention. Be astonished. And tell about it. We’re soaked in distractions. The world didn’t have to be beautiful. We can and should think about that beauty and be grateful.”
