Luis G. Gutierrez Bridge (Cushing) Construction Information

Construction of the Tucson Modern Streetcar project started the week of April 2, 2012. The City of Tucson awarded the contract to Old Pueblo Trackworks - a collaboration between Granite Construction and Railworks Tracks Systems - to construct the rail line and install the overhead electrical system that will power the vehicles.

The work will start with heavy civil work with multiple crews working in construction zones three blocks at a time. These zones will proceed with rolling closures to minimize the impact to traffic and businesses. Construction to build the new streetcar line will happen in two phases.

    • Phase 1: Roadways will be "opened up" in short, linear segments to perform underground work on utilities. This Utility work includes improvements, upgrades and relocations of water, sewer, gas, electrical, and communication lines, if those lines are underground. In areas where there are overhead lines from the historical trolley, those lines will be removed. Then crews will come in and rebuild sidewalks in areas where future streetcar stops will be. Finally, new roadway will be placed, with long sections of pre-cast rails.
    • Phase 2: Crews will concentrate on installing the rail radii. In each area where the streetcar makes a turn, the roadway will be opened and underground work will be performed. Then crews will replace and install the custom built rails that for the turning movements.

Business Assistance Before and During Construction

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the RTA offer resources and advocates to help businesses before and during streetcar project construction. Ombudsmen convey information to the project team about business concerns so issues can be addressed.
