9/11 Truthers, Mitt Romney's Dogs March in Takoma Park's Fourth of July Parade

The 9/11 truthers at the 2008 Takoma Park Fourth of July Parade.
If there's one thing that's quintessentially American and sure to be celebrated on the Fourth of July, it's freedom of speech. And at yesterday's Takoma Park Parade, two groups took their freedom to express themselves—no matter how disagreeable or odd their opinions are—seriously.

For yet another year the local chapter of the 9/11 truther movement—the folks who don't believe the official story about what happened on September 11, 2001—marched in the Takoma Park Parade, driving a pickup truck called the "Truth Mobile" festooned with U.S. flags and signs demanding the real story behind the attacks. Despite the town's long-standing left-leaning ways, the truthers didn't seem to garner much support or attention—according to parade-goers, they were mostly met with silence.

A little more humorously, at least two groups used the parade to protest Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney's famous admission that he used to put his dog in a crate on the roof of his car during family vacations. One man drove a station wagon with a dog crate on top of it (there was a woman in the crate, while a fake dog hung out the window), while the Good Dog, Bad Romney group walked their canine companions in the procession.

The Palisades Parade in D.C. saw its own share of political advocacy. Supporters of a proposed initiative that would ban corporate contributions to local campaigns marched, as did advocates for D.C. statehood. They were joined by midwifery supporters and Spring Valley residents demanding a formal study of a part of the neighborhood once used by the U.S. Army to bury toxic munitions.

so-called "Truthers" are both on the left and the right, but in both cases on the farthest side of crazy where those two ideologies tend to meet and blur.

  • Batman1234

I wonder if the fake dog looked anything like the dog Obama ate.

  • chris8lee

I love people who defend "the Official Account" as if the government COULDN'T lie

  • Shitler

"the government" isn't a unified entity. That's the single biggest flaw in logic of 9/11 Truthers.

  • settinguptheplay

don't try and preach logic to an occupy follower

  • Shiba Fussa

Glad to see the looney-left has their crackpots too

  • Chris Wieland

9/11 conspiracy theorists are overwhelmingly right wing "Libertarians."

  • Shiba Fussa

Well it did start off from the left but maybe if I didn't see so many '9/11 inside job' signs at the Occupy camps I'd believe you.

  • poopieface

Key word being right-wing. Most people who become libertarians do so because they see government as slow and incompetent, so it would be the height of ironies if they start thinking that the government is competent enough to pull off something this huge and keep it quiet for this long.

  • Fafou Dabou

Yesterday's parade was my first in Takoma Park and it was cute & a little off (mostly due to the Truthers and the Romney dog stuff ) but cute.

  • monkeyrotica

I used to laugh at crackpots with protest signs, until the whole Vatical molestation thing happened. A broken clock is right at least twice a day.

  • Over the River

I wasn't aware of that story, but I gotta say God Bless Him.

  • monkeyrotica

He was a fixture in front of the Vatican embassy for years. We'd be heading up Massachusetts to go to Tenleytown or Bethesda and there he was with his placards, rain or shine. When all the molestation claims came to light, you'd figure there'd be some vidication, but there's really no closure on something like this.

  • mirrorballdc

Mitt Romney's dogs blew up the World Trade Center.

  • monkeyrotica

But who blew Mitt Romney's dogs? The silence from the Heritage Foundation is deafening.

  • knackers

    Oh. My. God.

    Dan Snyder was behind 9/11?

  • Bethesdaist

I think we have our next DCist HH tshirt idea!

  • Shiba Fussa

Would the design include dogs flying into the buildings or would the dogspitators be placing TNT at the base of the towers?

  • ADrauglis

     Flying Dog Brewery could sponsor!

  • DonKeysHoTea

an anti-bullshit thing, more likely. not exactly a 9/11 truther myself, but an awful lot of the 9/11 report is complete crap. not saying the illuminatti and the clone of dick cheney did it, but why can't anyone ask a few questions without being immediately labelled a nut-case?

  • Shiba Fussa

What I find crap is that out of the thousands of people in the cover-up not one person has spoken up!

  • monkeyrotica

Oh, don't worry. Barry O'Hitler's "death panels" will have them blown up at Carousel and have the bill sent to their survivors.

  • spookiness

+1 for the Logan's Run reference!

  • monkeyrotica

Way to cover up for Dick Cheney's clone, jerk. Obviously they've gotten to you, too.

  • mustourdman

It took a while for them to get to me.  I only ranked 198,472,395th among the 300 million or so co-conspirators involved in the coverup.

  • mustourdman

Because these people won't accept rational answers to any of their questions.

  • Ollie Pooeater

Exactly. That and most of the explanations to their questions require a beyond Junior High School understanding of science. Watching "Ancient Aliens" on the History Channel is not a proper substitute.

These are the same people that type on computers directly on their laps but get worried that the electrical meter in their basement is going to kill them. They'll believe anything on the internet, but can't be bothered to read a college level textbook.

  • monkeyrotica

I don't need your fancy book learnin to know that Barry Sotero is an anagram for "RAT SOMBRERO."

  • Over the River

    Shut up you Nut-Case!

  • poopieface

What exactly was crap about them?

  • CJ_Scudworth

Despite the town's long-standing left-leaning ways, the truthers didn't seem to garner much support or attention

I don't know what left-leaning has to do with 9/11 Truthers, really.

  • ADrauglis

I think that there is a tendency for lefties to be open-minded enough to hear you out. I've heard more from 9/11 truthers on Pacifica Radio than anywhere else. If don't know Pacifica, it's for people who think that NPR is too conservative. They're always been willing to let crackpot voices be heard.

  • poopieface

    An anti-Bush thing I'm guessing.

  • MrEricSir

When I think of Bush, "criminal mastermind" is not a phrase that comes to mind.

  • D_Rez

It's just perfect that their vehicle is a pick-up with Maryland tags.
Which fortunate politicians were assigned a place either directly before or after these very special folks?

  • settinguptheplay

well with Takoma Park being in Maryland shouldn't it be expected to have Maryland tags?

I remember being in a booth placed next to Robin Fiker at a community event once

  • D_Rez

There's a Takoma Park in Maryland, too?
    *ducks*

  • Ollie Pooeater

     Point! threechordme.

  • settinguptheplay

even the various communist parties don't let the truthers march with them

  • SpeakSoftlyCarryABigStick

In Soviet Russia, 9/11 truth you.

  • Shitler

What happens first? A 9/11 Truther gets laid or the US government admits a cover-up?

  • CJ_Scudworth

The government is hiding all of the people who will have sex with 9/11 Truthers in a secret warehouse!

  • SpeakSoftlyCarryABigStick

It's being studied by top men...Top. Men.
