The 2012 Strange Horizons Fund Drive
This fund drive has now closed! If you're looking to support Strange Horizons, please see our main donate page.
Welcome to the 2012 Strange Horizons fund drive!
For twelve years now, Strange Horizons has pursued a number of goals: to publish great fiction and poetry that expands the possibilities of speculative fiction, and in-depth discussions of the same; to encourage and support new writers of sf from diverse backgrounds; and to make content available free of charge while still paying contributors professional rates, without being dependent on advertisers or corporate interests.
We've been proud to publish work by such writers as Saladin Ahmed, Charlie Jane Anders, Christopher Barzak, Elizabeth Bear, Bruce Boston, Cecil Castellucci, Matthew Cheney, John Clute, L. Timmel Duchamp, Hal Duncan, Amal El-Mohtar, Carol Emshwiller, Molly Gloss, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, N. K. Jemisin, John Kessel, Meghan McCarron, Farah Mendlesohn, David Moles, Tim Pratt, Adam Roberts, Benjamin Rosenbaum, John Scalzi, Nisi Shawl, Lewis Shiner, Vandana Singh, Genevieve Valentine, Jo Walton, and too many others to list. Stories published at Strange Horizons have been shortlisted for the Theodore Sturgeon, Locus, World Fantasy, Hugo, and Tiptree Awards.
A huge part of our success has been down to you, our readers. Strange Horizons relies on donations from readers to stay in business—all of the magazine's staff are unpaid volunteers, and your donations enable us to continue to publish weekly issues, and to pay contributors professional rates.
So each year we hold a fund drive. As you can see from the rocket-meter at the side of the page, this year our official goal is to raise US$8,000, but we have a number of things we'd like to do to raise more; and in addition to our regular prize draw, we've put together some bonus content and other rewards for donors. For details, read on!

This Year's Goals
As mentioned above, this year's fund drive target is US$8,000: that's enough to allow us to continue publishing at our current schedule, paying our current rates, for the next year. But we'd like to do more, both for our contributors and our readers, so these are our additional goals:
- If we raise $9,000, we will increase our pay rate for poetry to $30 per poem as of 1st January 2013
- If we raise $10,000, we will also increase our pay rate for reviews to $30 per review as of 1st January 2013
- If we raise $11,000, we will also begin releasing free podcasts of our stories as of 1st January 2013
Fund Drive Rewards
We're aiming to raise more this year than we've ever raised before, so we've expanded our rewards as well. If you have any questions about these rewards or claiming them, please email editor@strangehorizons.com.
- We've put together a fund drive special issue of the magazine, with extra content to be published as we reach big round numbers. We've got a new story by Ken Liu, poems by Michele Bannister and Mat Joiner, a special feature article, and more—check out the fund drive issue page for full details.
- As usual, every donor will be entered into our prize draw, featuring an array of books, artwork and other goodies—be sure to check out the prize page throughout the month, as we add more.
- And finally, if you donate at a specific level, you'll receive an additional reward or recognition as detailed below.
$20 donation—sponsor a review (4 sponsorships gone, 16 remaining) or a poem (5 sponsorships gone, 15 remaining)
Show your support for SH! If you donate $20, you'll have the option to sponsor a review or poem that we publish in 2013, as indicated by an acknowledgement alongside the published work.
$30 donation—get a Strange Horizons mug (all gone) or t-shirt (22 remaining, see below for sizes)
The last of the classic SH merchandise! When these are gone, there will be no more Strange Horizons merch with the current logo, so you'll be able to say you supported the magazine back in the day. T-shirts are available in the following sizes (all men's fit): small (5), medium (6), large (0), XL (5), or XXL (6).
$50 donation—sponsor an article (6 sponsorships gone, 0 remaining)
As for reviews or poems above, show your support! Your donation will be acknowledged alongside one of our published articles next year.
$100 donation—pick a book to be reviewed (3 gone, 7 remaining)
Maybe you've read an overlooked gem that you can't believe we haven't covered. Maybe you've read an overpraised horror that you think needs taking apart! Maybe there's a classic work you'd like us to take a fresh look at, or maybe you're even brave enough to submit your own book for the consideration of our most exacting critics. We can't guarantee you'll agree with our verdict in any case, but we can promise that if you donate $100, at some point in 2013 we'll give your pick the demanding and thorough examination you've come to expect from SH.
$300 donation—sponsor a story (10 available) and receive a mug or t-shirt (if available)
At our current rates, $300 is the average amount we pay for a short story, so if you donate at this level, we'll recognize your contribution to the magazine with a short acknowledgment alongside one of the stories we publish next year. We'll also send you a mug or a t-shirt, while our stocks last (see the $30 donations, above), and many, many thanks.
How Can I Spread the Word?
Please mention the fund drive on your social networks! We've included buttons for Twitter, Facebook and other networks at the bottom of this page for convenience. If you'd like to blog about the fund drive, you can now embed our progress rocket in your page, to keep up with how the fund drive is going and make it easy for your readers to donate. Thank you!
A Final Note
Just two more words: thank you. Strange Horizons would not exist without your donations. With them, we hope it will be around for many years to come.
