The Colorado Rockies have named Dante Bichette as their new hitting coach, replacing Carney Lansford, the club announced on Tuesday.
It looks as though the organization has decided to go after its former greats to lead the team in a new direction. Just last week, former shortstop Walt Weiss became the sixth manager in club history; now Bichette, one of the original Blake Street Bombers, goes back to the organization in which he became one of baseball's most powerful hitters in the early 1990s.
Bichette played for Colorado between 1993-1999 and was a three-time NL All-Star for three straight seasons (1994-1996), while also being a solid candidate for MVP in 1995, finishing in second place behind Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. He hit .316/.352/.540 with 201 home runs over his seven-year career with the Rockies.
Jason Giambi was also reported as a candidate for this position after he was passed over as one of the finalists for the Rockies' managerial spot.
