Welcome to the Future Forty – a look at the young talent in the Seattle Mariners organization. A few explanations:
WAR – Wins Above Replacement assuming the player fulfills his potential. It’s not a peak/ceiling rating, in that every player on this list could outperform their projected WAR if they develop better than currently expected. It also is not a projection of how each player is going to turn out – obviously, most of these guys will fail to develop and never make a meaningful contribution to the major league team. This is measuring the player’s abilities to contribute in the big leagues if they make it given their current skill set and development path.
ETA – This is not the estimated year that they make their major league debut. This is, instead, the first possible year that they might make a meaningful contribution to the team winning. Triunfel might get a September call-up, but he won’t help the team win in 2009. The ETA is based on when we expect the player to be ready to help the big league club, at least as much as they can, anyway.
Also, you’ll note that all of the players that have spent time in the U.S. are hyperlinked to their FanGraphs page in the table. Hopefully you find this a helpful resource to get to each player’s statistics in a quick and timely way.
