Skiing in Canada can sometimes be a waste of time provided you do not have the right ski gear. We are talking about the right thermal body shirt and pants that can keep you warm and transfer moisture to the next layer, to begin with. Ski socks that are padded against harder impacts and fleece jackets or ski booths that perfectly bonds with your ski bindings are also must-haves. Plus, special ski helmets or hats that can protect your head from low temperatures and slope accidents are something you should not start without.

Why is Whistler considered the best spot for skiing and snowboarding in Canada? Well, many persons of the opinion that any and every icy slope will suffice for snowboarding. Well, such an approach never works. If you have any doubts, just compare the snow on the slope around your backyard with the slope that you find at tourist spots and snowboarding destinations. A lot of maintenance is required to ensure that your experience is completely safe and fun.

Further, people fail to understand that snowboarding is not just about the physical activity. It is also about enjoying the view. The sight of the entire horizon filled with white, green and blue colors as you go down the slope is something that cannot be understood by words. Hence, never make the mistake of thinking that any and every snowboarding resort will do if you want to have real fun.

What is the point of going to an expensive destination only to discover that you have to live in virtual tin boxes and work on a very tight budget? Would it not be better if you choose a more affordable option that will help you enjoy not just the snowboarding but other facilities and amenities as well? This is where Whistler ranks very high amongst all the snowboarding resorts in Canada. It is very affordable considering the quality of experience it offers. Since there is huge demand, it is not surprising that space is a perpetually booked in Whistler.

Dion Phaneuf One Of The Best

Hockey is king in Canada and most people there play hockey at some level even if it’s only recreational. Many will know or have heard of the better stars of the game. One of the true stars of the NHL, for those of you who haven’t heard of him, is Dion Phaneuf. Phaneuf is a 26-year old Canadian sensation ho plays defense. He’s currently captaining the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL.

spacer

Overall, this bright young player got drafted 9th by the Calgary Flames in 2003’s NHL Entry Draft. On the day he and the other draft prospect were well dress in some nice suit fabrics. Dion made a whopping NHL debut back in 2005 following a 4-year junior career that he worked hard to build a great reputation with the famous Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League. Here he won the Defenseman of the Year award twice. This man set an exciting Flames record for the highest goals ever by a 1st-year defenseman.

He gained even more fame as he came to be known as one of the finalists working for the CMT (Calder Memorial Trophy) between 2005 and 2006. Just 2 years later, Dion managed to become one of the finalists (with his skills as the best defensemen) for the prestigious James Norris Memorial Trophy, although, sadly, he didn’t win either of the awards.

Phaneuf takes pride of being a 2-time NHL All-Star. He has represented Canada worldwide a total of three times so far. He won silver as well as gold medals by competing in the World Junior Hockey Championship (was held in 2004 and 2005 respectively), and he managed to win a high-status gold medal in Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships in 2007. Everyone is looking forward to what he has up his sleeve next as the new season beckons!

Whistle your way to Whistler BC!

One of the best skiing resorts can be found in Whistler Canada. The site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Whistler ski resort and complex boasts impressive facilities and some stunning scenery from atop the mountains. A mere twenty to thirty minute drive from Vancouver, you can enjoy the duality of city life along with some refreshing winter sport. One thing you will definitely want to do is to take lots of pictures and share them so don’t forget your mobile phone.

As you’ll be subject to higher roaming charges then in Europe, it is worth investing in an alternative sim for your trip. Companies including abroadband can offer travellers a wide array of options to help reduce the costs of data whilst abroad. Get this sorted out before you leave unless you want to come home to a bill that’s way out of your league. Once you’ve got that sorted it’s time to get on the slopes and start skiing, but which are the best spots to pick?

My recommendation is to start off at Blackcomb Mountain and work your way towards Whistler Mountain, that way you will get to see virtually everything en route. There are many sights to see along the way including the Blackcomb and Hortsman Glaciers and 7th Heaven – a mix of slow and fast runs. The 7th Heaven express in particular is a great run taking you down at fairly high speeds to Sunset Boulevard at the bottom of the peak. Once you’re there you can take a break and enjoy the view before heading back up either the Solar Coaster or Catskinner chair lifts to the top. You could spend a few days just at 7th Heaven if you wished, but as there is so much more to see its worth moving on after a day and a half.

At the top of Whistler Mountain is Whistler peak which boasts amazing views of the mountains and some of the most rugged alpine terrain you’re ever likely to ski across. Conversely it also hosts some of the most scenic routes for skiers of any calibre which is great. Only advanced skiers should tackle the Million Dollar ridge however as it skirts close to the edge of the peak with a long way down to the bottom if you went over. On the other side are the Harmony Bumps which will give even the most skilled skier a fair workout.

If you ever got bored of skiing then there are plenty of other options on offer across the peaks including the Coca Cola Tube Park at the bottom of Blackcomb and the Crystal Ridge runs. Snowboarding is a big sport on the Blackcomb peak with plenty of runs and terrain deviations to keep even the most hardened boarder happy. Wikipedia has some useful history available here on Whistler if you ever want to know more about one of Canada’s most beautiful spots to ski.
