Ask Not What Santorum Can Do For You...

In January 2006, Rick Santorum addressed the Centre County Republican Party. During the course of his speech Rick actually had the gall to compare putting a Santorum bumper sticker on your car to serving your country in Iraq or Afghanistan.

That's right, he literally said that putting one of his bumper stickers on your vehicle was a way "to step up and serve your country." The video is on the left, here's the transcript:

Santorum: "And yet we have brave men and women who are willing to step forward because they know what's at stake. They're willing to sacrifice their lives for this great country. What I'm asking all of you tonight is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country?" (emphasis ours)

Rick Freaks on 'This Week'

On July 31, 2005, Rick appeared on ABC's "This Week." As George Stephanopoulos pressed him on answers regarding his recent statements about working moms and the clergy sex abuse scandal, Rick became extremely flustered and started to raise his voice, stammer and fumble for answers. We have 5 clips for you.

In the first clip, Rick says he would support a constitutional amendment banning abortion.

In clip #2, Rick claims that Gloria Steinem has turned society against stay-at-home moms. He also demonstrates just how well he knows those "radical feminists" that he babbles about ad nauseum. C'mon Rick, you can only name one feminist? And Gloria Steinem hasn't been considered a radical for well over 30 years. At least make an effort if you're going to try to back up your ridiculous arguments.

In clip #3, George challenges Rick on his assertion that in 2002, when he made his original remarks blaming Boston for clergy sexual abuse, Boston was the "epicenter" of the scandal. Rick, confronted with actual facts, has a bit of a problem defending himself.

In clip #4, Rick challenges Sen. Hillary Clinton to a public debate.

In the final clip, Rick still can't seem to make up his mind about running for President. He definitely won't run, unless, of course, he will. But he's sure that he won't be campaigning all over the country. Wow Rick, thanks for the straight answer.

Birth Control and the Pursuit of Happiness Harm America

On July 28, 2005, Rick appeared on CN8's "Nitebeat with Barry Nolan."

In clip #1, Rick says that birth control harms women and society, and it's "not a healthy thing for our country."

In clip #2, Rick says that the "liberal" view of freedom is "not the kind of freedom our founders envisioned." Elaborating, he says "It is an entire culture that focus (sic) on immediate gratification and the pursuit of happiness and personal pleasure. And it is harming America."

Rick Says he's Mainstream

On July 28, 2005, Rick appeared on CNN's "Inside Politics," and repeated his convoluted argument comparing abortion to slavery. He went on to say that he hopes every Pennsylvanian reads his book because, "90% of what's in this book, 80% of Pennsylvanians are going to agree with." We're still trying to figure out what that means, much less how he arrived at those numbers. What's that old line about statistics?

But in the interview's finest moment, Rick claims that his book represents "the mainstream of thought in Pennsylvania." We respectfully disagree.

Some of Rick's Best Friends are Stay-at-Home Dads

On July 27, 2005, Rick appeared on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" and Chris brought up the negative comments in Rick's book about working moms.

In the following clip Rick tells Chris that the "cultural elite" do not respect stay-at-home moms. How is it that a sitting U.S. Senator doesn't believe/realize that the term "cultural elite" applies to him? Rick goes on to say that the reason he thinks stay-at-home moms are not affirmed is that the members of the "cultural elite" don't value the family and liberals believe in "selfish freedom."

Finally, Matthews asks Rick why he doesn't stay at home and Rick uses his answer to let us know that some of his best friends are stay-at-home dads.

Rick on CNN's 'Newsnight'

On July 25, 2005 Rick appeared on "Newsnight with Aaron Brown." In Cip #1 Rick says that Griswold vs. Connecticut was wrongly decided, that there is no right to privacy, and therefore the state has the right to regulate the use of birth control by married couples.

In Clip #2, when asked about his remarks blaming the clergy sexual abuse scandal on the liberal culture of Boston, Rick says that when he originally made the statement, in 2002, he didn't realize that the abuse had happened in other cities, but now he understands that his statement actually applies to many other cities as well.

Rick’s latest hypocrisy

On June 23, 2005, Rick appeared on “The Don Imus Show” to discuss recent remarks made by Senator Dick Durbin. Rick said that Durbin had not made a satisfactory apology and used his own “apology”, for his remarks comparing Democrats to Hitler, as an example for Durbin.

This is amazing because Senator Durbin issued a public statement of regret, which he read on the Senate floor and is posted on his web site. In his statement Durbin apologizes for his original statement 4 seperate times.

In May, Rick said his own statement “was a mistake and I meant no offense.” That is what he apparently considers a full apology. We’re not sure that Rick should be giving etiquette advice to anyone.

Speaking of the Hitler comparison, in the second clip from the Imus show Rick says that was all just a big joke anyway.

And in the third clip, Imus introduces Rick by saying that even the Senator himself would admit that his policy stances are “absurd.”
