About PhilJobs

PhilJobs is an advertisement service for jobs in philosophy. The service is currently free for both job seekers and advertisers. Our ads appear not only on PhilJobs itself, but also on PhilPapers and its widely read email alerts.

PhilJobs is run by David Bourget (London) and David Chalmers (ANU/NYU) with the support of the Centre for Computing in Philosophy, Institute of Philosophy, University of London.

Frequently Asked Questions

General

Who can use PhilJobs?

Anyone can search for positions on PhilJobs. Anyone can advertise on PhilJobs as long as the ad satisfies the relevance and verification criteria below.

What sorts of jobs can one advertise on PhilJobs?

Any job that requires some professional expertise in philosophy, from research assistant jobs to full professor jobs.

How complete is PhilJobs?

We aim to have a listing (either an official ad or a stub) for all jobs advertised in major venues for jobs in philosophy within a few days of publication.

Do you verify or screen jobs ads?

When a link to an institutional website is provided, we verify that the ad submitted to Philjobs corresponds to the ad on the institutional website. Ads which cannot be verified in this way are flagged as unverified.

Do/will you support online submission of materials?

PhilJobs does not yet support online submission of materials, but we plan to move in that direction in future years.

What about further feature X?

We are glad to hear suggestions for further useful features, either via our feedback form (under "Contact Us") or at the PhilJobs discussion forum on PhilPapers.

What is your relationship to the American Philosophical Association?

PhilJobs is an international site run independently of any national philosophical association. We are not trying to undermine the APA's Jobs for Philosophers or any other national association's service, but we do believe that PhilJobs provides a much better service than they currently provide. We were spurred to create the service by the perception that there is a need for a sophisticated online service for jobs in philosophy and that national associations have not filled that need to date.

Do you have a policy regarding discrimination?

Yes: we require all advertisers to abide by the APA's nondiscrimination policy, which we fully support.

Will you ever charge for the use of PhilJobs?

PhilJobs is currently free for both users and advertisers, and we expect that this will continue in the short term. In the longer term, it is not out of the question that PhilJobs will charge advertisers, but we expect that it will remain free for job candidates.

Why are some ads labeled as unverified?

Unverified ads are ads that have been checked by a moderator but cannot be verified in detail because they lack a link to an official job ad on the institution's site.

How does searching by AOS/AOC work?

AOS/AOC areas include the most common areas listed in philosophy job advertisements, listed in four groups for convenience. Job advertisers have been asked to classify AOS and AOC by these areas as well as providing an explicit text version (which is sometimes more informative). The starred areas (e.g. ethics) are "clusters" which include further areas (e.g. metaethics) in turn. Searching on a cluster also returns jobs in any area within the cluster and vice versa. Every search returns open jobs. If you specify both AOS and AOC, each AOS is also included as an AOC.

How does searching by multiple factors work?

Searching is conjunctive across factors (e.g. job type, AOS) and disjunctive within a factor. So if you search by both job type and AOS, only jobs that match your criteria on all factors will be returned. If you check multiple options under job type, jobs that match any of these options will be deemed to match your criteria on that factor.

What is the difference between an ad and a stub?

Ads are submitted by employers and contain full details and text regarding a position. Stubs are entered by PhilJobs staff and contain basic details regarding a position and links to a venue where full details can be found. We encourage departments to convert stubs into proper ads. We normally email advertisers a link to do this. If you have not received such a link, contact us with the details of your ad.

What is the difference between jobs and listings?

These are the same except that when an employer advertises multiple positions at once, there can be multiple jobs per listing.

Why not include full details with stubs?

The ethics of copying full ads from other venues is murky. On one hand we would be doing employers a service by displaying their ads free. On the other hand, they haven't consented, and nor have the other venues. By simply including a few details along with a link we avoid consent-based objections while still providing a useful service for PhilJobs users.

What are 'Save', 'Exclude', and 'My Jobs'?

'My Jobs' is a user-specific list of jobs in which you are particularly interested, perhaps because you plan to apply to the job. To use the feature you must be logged in using your PhilPapers account. You can then save any job to your 'My Jobs' list by clicking 'Save' under any listing of the job. Jobs on this list can then be marked as 'Applied' once you have applied to them. You can also mark some jobs as excluded from all future searches by clicking 'Exclude'. These decisions can be reversed on the 'My Jobs' page.
