Verizon Spectrum Sale Coming Early Next Year
In 'Serious Discussions,' Wants 'Serious' Price for Spectrum
by Karl Bode Tuesday 13-Nov-2012 tags: wireless · wireless
"We have more coverage than all of our competitors combined," Verizon CFO Fran Shammo recently proclaimed after giving an update on the company's LTE network build that included announcing that the build would be completed six months ahead of schedule. The company also has more spectrum than they need, and is getting ready for a sale the company promised if their deal with the cable industry saw regulatory approval. The spectrum, acquired in 2008's AWS auction, exists in the 700 MHz Lower A and B Block spectrum, while Verizon's LTE network uses 700 MHz upper C spectrum. According to Shammo, the spectrum sale should occur in the first quarter of next year, and that the company is having "very serious discussions" about the spectrum. Verizon previously stated that 64 companies were interested in the spectrum, though it will of course go to the company with the deepest pockets -- most likely AT&T.

I wouldn't be surprised...

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Google pick it up. That is, if Verizon would even consider selling to Google.

Re: I wouldn't be surprised...

Google already bought Motorola. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after the result of the T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger.

Google getting into the cellular market would be very good for consumers. I think of Google as being more of a political agenda than a company -- making money is just something they do on the side. Look at what Google did to influence the wireless spectrum auction.

Google has the financial backbone to do what T-Mobile can't do on its own. I would like to see Google do to the wireless industry to what they're doing to the broadband market in Kansas City. Break down the barriers of innovation and force companies to be more consumer friendly.

For the patent portfolio.

What exactly was that again? And what has been the impact?

FCC should force them to return the spectrum.

All spectrum sales need to have a condition that if there is no build plan filed within 30 days of purchase for approved use of that spectrum within, say, a 24-month time frame, the owner loses the license to the spectrum with no monetary compensation.

Basically anything to keep companies from squatting on spectrum just to keep the competitors out and/or the prices artificially inflated and prohibitive for new competition.

Umm, VZ is planning to sell licenses for use of the spectrum.

Re: FCC should force them to return the spectrum.

So what happens to the condition that this spectrum is to be used by mid '13? If the FCC lets this sale happen they are completely useless and might as well just let these companies do whatever they want.

Re: FCC should force them to return the spectrum.

Yes, I've seen that they bought the A, B and C blocks and only used the upper C. Held on to the others so that no one else could use it. Now they're so kind as to sell the A and B to the highest bidder since their buildout timeframe is expiring quickly

I was speaking to your comment about the FCC being useless.

But Apple looking to screw over Google purchases it instead. Screams and Lamentations of the four letter kind are to be heard at Google HQ, Apple hearing this just smiles. spacer

This is good news

For a while, it was looking like Verizon was going to absolutely dominate over AT&T, and be able to corner the market on LTE. Now this, combined with AT&T buying up a ton of SMH from other companies means they will be in similar positions spectrum wise.

I guess someone at Verizon finally realized that the lower and upper blocks can't be used by the same devices... ooops. Although AT&T doesn't currently support Lower A, it would be easy to add to future phones, and plays nice with their Lower B and C deployments.

spacer This seems to happen quite a bit here...

But 700MHz spectrum is NOT AWS spectrum. AWS spectrum is 1710-1755 uplink and 2110-2155 downlink.
