Ubuntu Gaming Laptop

Tuesday, 20 November 2012 05:05 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

System76 has put together a Linux-powered gaming laptop.  That's right.  Linux.  Specifically Ubuntu.  This 17.3" beast has some great specifications - including a GeForce GTX 670MX or GTX 680M GPU.  Combine that with a fast Core i7 CPU and enough RAM, and you've got a pretty sweet system.  Check it out right from the horses mouth.

Nintendo Wii U Teardown

Tuesday, 20 November 2012 04:56 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

Nintendo is always hush-hush regarding their hardware, but it didn't take long for a bunch of different sites to snag the latest console from the Big N and tear it apart to see what makes it tick.  It appears that AMD is proudly powering this console.  Take a look at all the details over at AnandTech today.

The Wii U hardware itself looks a lot like a larger Wii. Getting inside the chassis is also quite similar. The CMOS battery door is the first thing you'll have to remove, followed by 8 more screws (a mixture of philips head and tri-wing). The bulk of these screws are behind console-colored stickers, be sure to peel them all off.

While this certainly isn't technology related, it's pretty nifty.

Laptop Roundup

Monday, 19 November 2012 07:59 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

As we kick off the news for this fine Monday, we've got a few laptops kicking around the news bucket that you may find interesting.  The ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A is on the bench at TechwareLabs and they seem somewhat happy with the performance, but not with a few of the included bits.

If you want something with a little more gaming prowess, check out the Maingear Vybe 15 gaming laptop over at TweakTown.  This unit ships with a Core i7-3840QM CPU, NVIDIA 660M graphics on a 1920x1080 screen.  It's a pretty solid piece of kit.

HardwareHeaven makes LAN gamers jealous with the Schenker XMG P722 Laptop. This beast is a 17" unit that packs in everything that you could want.  Including the latest i7 CPU, SSD, Dual GPUs and more.  It's clearly a desktop replacement, and it's clearly a powerhouse.

Wii U Gaming and More

Monday, 19 November 2012 07:29 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

ShackNews has posted up their review of the Wii U and overall they seem to think that it has a lot of things that could be better.  That being said, it may be just what you're looking for to tide you over until the PS4 or Xbox720 lands next year - but at $349, I'm saving my money.

Thermaltake Armor Revo Gene Review

Saturday, 17 November 2012 00:27 Written by William "HooRaH" Carls

spacer We have just taken a look at the Thermaltake Armor Revo Gene Mid-Tower Chassis.  This case has all the great features you've come to expect from Thermaltake's Armor Series, but it puts them into a more concentrated mid-tower package.  If you like some flash with your substance, the Armor Revo Gene delivers on both accounts.  Please check our review for all the details.

The left side of the Armor Revo Gene has some great features. One is the large, clear plastic window that allows you to see your hardware. The angular clear window is surrounded by rivets which give the case a nice industrial look. The second feature which I'm surprised you don't really see too often is the headset holder. At first I thought that the headset holder could easily snap off and I would end up with an eyesore. This is not the case. It seems to have been designed to just simply pop off if you accidentally hit it too hard.

Google launches 1 Gbps Internet Service

Friday, 16 November 2012 15:59 Written by Jason

The good news is Google has launched their new 1 Gbps internet service which is so fast you have to wear a seatbelt. The bad news is it isn't in my neighbourhood and you have to live in Kansas City to get it. CNN has more details about the service and you can start wishing it was coming to your city soon.

After months of fanfare and anticipation, gigabit home Internet service Google Fiber finally went live on Tuesday in Kansas City.

The search giant is offering 1 Gbps speeds for just $70 per month -- significantly faster and cheaper than what any traditional American ISPs are offering.

Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5

Monday, 19 November 2012 07:52 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

You either love or hate Chris Pirillo, but I think he was very fair when comparing the Nexus 4 vs the iPhone 5 in the video below.  Some corrections he noted after posted the video are below.

* 8GB Nexus 4 is $300; the 16GB is $350 (still a value for the price)
* I said Nexus 7 at 2:40 when I meant to say Nexus 4 (same feature, though)
* iPhone 5 has 1 speaker, 1 mic (2 grills) - still better sound than Nexus 4
* I have 700+ apps on my iPhone, which reportedly increases boot time
* The Nexus buttons are software-based, not dedicated capacitive buttons

Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP 16GB Kit

Monday, 19 November 2012 06:13 Written by Benjamin "Zeus" Heide

spacer We have just taken a look at the Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP DDR3-1600 16GB Kit. This kit has a nice low profile and is designed to fit in systems with some low clearance requirements. It has a lot to offer in the way of performance and seems to be a nice solid kit.  Please check our review for all the details.

The Ballistix Tactical is definitely a low profile design, but the heat spreaders look like they can definitely help dissipate any excess heat. This coupled with the lower voltage used in default and XMP1 modes makes cooling a breeze. They also feel pretty high quality. The heat spreaders are aluminum with cutouts to create more surface area.

Xbox Live turns 10

Friday, 16 November 2012 16:10 Written by Jason

Apparently already a decade has passed since the launch of Xbox Live as they are celebrating their 10th anniversary. Unfortunately I didn't get Xbox Live anything for this big milestone but if you log into your Xbox Live account you'll have the chance to win some prizes this weekend. Engadget has more details.

It's hard to believe a whole decade has passed since the birth of Xbox Live, but here we are. From its roots as an online multiplayer service, Live has grown into a full-fledged entertainment platform bringing users Achievements and Gamerscores, customizable avatars, entertainment services and apps like Xbox Music and SmartGlass.

People are already waiting in line for the Wii U

Friday, 16 November 2012 15:55 Written by Jason

Ninendo's next generation console (Wii U) will be released on Sunday and there are actually people hardcore enough to be waiting in line for it already in New York. So far there are only about a dozen people in line but thats more than I would have expected for a product that isn't all that flashy. CNET has more details on the upcoming release.

Apple isn't the only technology company that can command a line of hard-core fans.

With the upcoming Wii U console launching on Sunday, Nintendo fans have already started to line up at the Japanese video game maker's flagship New York store in Rockefeller Center.

The line wasn't long -- roughly a dozen people were there, with some hanging out inside the store. But the metal barricades were up and individuals had been camping out for the past few days.
