While not everyone is sure what a copywriter does, everyone reads our work on a daily basis! If you read ads, websites, brochures and billboards, or listen to the radio or watch TV, then it’s likely you’ve come into contact with what I do. One day I’ll be researching the history of Australia’s oldest bank and the next a rationale for why we should all buy Thai beer. At the same time I’m usually dreaming up headlines for non-allergenic pillows, as well as revising a CEO’s thankyou letter to stakeholders.

COPYWRITING

Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre is a non-profit organisation that helps to settle migrants and refugees in the community and assist with job hunting and training. I interviewed dozens of migrants and Spectrum staff to create a 25-year anniversary book, which was launched at Parliament House.

MICM Property: These guys specialise in selling and renting glamorous inner-city properties. MICM Property is quite active in the sphere of energy conservation and sustainability, and is involved in a lot of work to reduce the environmental footprint of its buildings. Since late-2011 I have researched and written articles for their monthly investment newsletter. I also write copy for their website.

MARKETING

New Zealand Winegrowers is the national organisation for New Zealand’s grape and wine sector. They act on behalf of over 700 wineries around NZ, and market their wines and activities around the world. For two months I assisted the Australian marketing and events managers to launch their 2012 ‘NZ in a Glass’ events along the eastern seaboard. Awesome people and an office full of beaut wine.

COPY EDITING

University of Melbourne: From a relatively small office in Carlton, the University of Melbourne communications department produces an amazing output of media: videos, brochures, podcasts, websites, media releases, booklets, you name it. I worked on the 2012 Graduate Prospectus as copy editor. This job required a thorough scan through thousands of lists, tables and footnotes – as well as a very quick turnaround.
