This is the fun stuff. I really enjoy writing for a diverse range of Australian publications, from broadsheets to online magazines. I’ve written about honeymoons in Mexico, small business, religious jewellery, the best libraries in Melbourne, and male menopause. I’ve interviewed firefighters in Samoa, theatrical makeup artists, film festival directors of all kinds, Jewish paramedics, and lady bodybuilders. Since late-2011 I have also worked as a local business and bar reviewer. Tough gigs!

EDITING
Wingspan magazine: Birds Australia (now BirdLife Australia) is a non-profit bird conservation organisation with 10,000 members. As Production Editor of the quarterly membership magazine Wingspan from 2009-2011, I produced nine 64-page magazines, as well as five supplements. I oversaw the publications strategy, managed staff, interns and volunteers and coordinated busy production timelines. I developed all processes and procedures for my team and managed the quarterly budget and cashflow.
I am particularly proud of the redesign of the magazine. In 2010 I refreshed the layout and content of Wingspan, which had been produced with the same design for 13 years. The magazine was awarded the ‘Best Book in the Periodical Category’ award from the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales at the 2012 Whitley Book Awards.
REVIEWING
Yelp is a local business reviewing site that launched in Australia last year. It is well established in the US as the ‘go to’ site for all the latest events, new restaurants, bars and up-to-date local information. To help populate the site with content before the Melbourne launch, I was employed as a scout reviewer. Some of my reviews are here, here and here.
The Age Good Bar Guide 2012 is the next book to follow the success of the Good Food Guides published by Fairfax. Edited by renowned food and wine writer Michael Harden, the book and app was released in June this year. I contributed 22 reviews of some of the best bars of Melbourne, which was great for my social life and not so great for my poor old liver. Examples of my reviews are here.
Broadsheet is a beautifully structured print and online newspaper based in Sydney and Melbourne. They really know what’s happening in this town, and their articles are a delight to read and look at. I reviewed Harry Rekas’ new magazine Large in December 2011.
Hide & Seek is published by a division of Hardie Grant Publishing. Based on a series of books aimed at people seeking unique, unpretentious and reasonably-priced places to visit in Australia’s capital cities, Hide & Seek published online reviews every month, and is now in print. A couple of reviews are published here and here.
