Cold Fear

I still remember the moment when I realised I’d made a serious mistake. Sometimes you push your luck too far, don’t think hard enough about risk, or whatever, and suddenly realise just how precarious your predicament has become. It was cold, it was very wet, and an abyss of rusted metal jutted upward to greet me from where I stared down in horror.

New Halo

As ever, I’m trying to get something great from this junction, but I’m still not quite there. It’s good to get something different going on with the lighting, though. My inner lighting nerd went all retro, packed a mountain of spare batteries, and I cranked up some ancient halogen technology.

Police Permission?

A friend hadn’t seen the changes to what is possibly the best drain in this city, so that was our destination. We made friends with turtles and frogs, while discussing photography, and contemplated a particular kind of shot that needed a good underground location. I suggested a stone junction way upstream, which we decided would be easiest to just drive to, seeing as there’s a manhole right there on the footpath. So, off we went.

Galactic Fulcrum

With seven hundred daytripping kilometres behind us in my two-door bubble-car, and two hundred yet to go, the world had become a stream of highway lights in a world of darkness. Hours tend to pass in a blur, one much like the next, until something interesting looms out of the darkness and shakes a weary traveller’s brain into alertness.

Cathedrals

I really do like fiddling with shadows and contrast. If there’s anything that I look at in my work and think “yeah, that’s what I do” it’s those contrasty backlit shots that pull in detail and texture. It’s not something that would necessarily be a useful approach for everyone, but it suits my aesthetics, and I use it often. I mean, I’ve shot wedding portraits using that lighting, originally something I just liked for drains.

Old Maps

Once upon a time there were waterholes here. It’s a long time since then, though, and there’s no sign at all of water from the ground above. The waterholes once fed a creek, which curved through low lands into magrove-lined waterways, and eventually the river. This is the remnant of the creek, enclosed and buried.

Seventy Three

I hadn’t shot this section of this drain in a good five years, mostly because it’s painfully small, and ultimately isn’t quite as impressive as the awesomeness one finds much further downstream. But, it’s a great little section of stonework, and in fact was probably my first stone drain, back in the day (the Toadie bridge doesn’t count).
