Subject: One year! - lovin' it!

Greetings Ken and Nick –

It has now been a year since I took delivery of my spiffy Renovo R4, and I wanted to write you a love letter about it.  I knew I would like this bike, but it has exceeded my high expectations in every way.

I’ve put about 6,000 miles on it in the past year, including the Furnace Creek 508 [right after I took delivery last year] and the Hoodoo 500 [about a month ago], and it is so darn comfortable on long rides I don’t know how I ever rode without it.  It climbs great – people are always amazed at how light it is (I have really light custom wheels, and the Di2 groupo is light too of course) – but what is amazing is the rock solid way it just motors along in the flats.  It is so smooth.  For an old guy like me it is perfect.

And oh yeah, it is beautiful!  Everywhere I go people admire it.  At the Hoodoo 500 start the announcer made a particular point of calling me to the front so he could show everyone “the first wooden bike we’ve ever had in the race”.  That was pretty cool.  Riding it around is like dating a supermodel, it sure gets positive attention.

Oh and by the way the Di2 has worked great … I was worried about the wiring and the battery in the seat post and all that, but the bottom line is I haven’t had any trouble with it.  The battery lasts forever and it is pretty much worry free.

Anyway I just wanted to report in and tell you how much I’ve enjoyed my Renovo.  If you ever need a testimonial from a customer, please let me know :)

Cheers

* Ken Wheeler is the founder and owner of Renovo Bicycles, Nick Wood is the guy who built my bike (and yeah, that really is his name :)

never forget

spacer This is a picture of the World Trade Center site, with the new Freedom tower which is under construction.  I think this is an entirely fitting tribute, I love that the site itself won't be built on, but instead will remaind dedicated to the memory of 9-11.  We must never forget and remain ever vigilant.

As those of you following me on my Facebook know I've been in Prague, Czech Republic, and actually flew back yesterday, which was already 9/11 in Europe, and wow flying on 9/11 really brought back memories from 11 years ago.

back?

spacer Hi blog public; I'm back?

I haven't posted here in ... wow, five months (I have continued posting on my Facebook in the meantime) ... but couldn't resist posting a 9-11 tribute today.

Maybe this will loosen my "posters block" and I'll get back into blogging. Stay tuned :)

At right, my favorite picture from my just-completed visit to Prague, Czech Republic, of Prague Castle with St. Vitus Catherdral, and the Karlov Most in the foreground.

Some stuff which has happened:

  • Moved to Westlake Island
  • Started a daily view from the bridge, following bike rides
  • Celebrated leap day
  • Visited Vancouver: USCAP conference
  • Went sailing in the Caribbean (fourteen days, seven islands)
  • Attended conference in San Jose: ATA conference
  • Began following the baby geese
  • Rode Breathless Agony (114 miles, 12,000 feet)
  • Spectated Amgen Tour of California, Mount Baldy stage
  • Visited Venice, Sweden, and Munich, conferences, customers, and symposia
  • Started something new; still cooking, stay tuned for [much] more :)
  • Enjoyed my Megan, wow
  • Sailed Round the Island race and C-15 nationals, yay
  • Kept riding to the beach
  • Enjoyed Le Tour de France, as always
  • Watched the London Olympics
  • Cheered as Curiosity landed on Mars
  • Felt amazing as Aperio agreed to be acquired by Leica (not celebrating yet)
  • Raced the Hoodoo 500 (517 miles, 34,000 feet), and finished!
  • Czeched out Prague: ECP conference

moved ... to Facebook

Sunday,  04/01/12  10:43 AM

spacer Hi y'all!  Well I haven't posted here for a while - a long while - my last post was in January, right after I'd moved physically.  The truth is that without meaning to I've moved digitally too ... to Facebook.

facebook.com/ole.eichhorn

Over the past six months I've become a daily Facebook poster, and while I don't really do my "linkblog" thing there (yet!), the best way to keep up with me is to subscribe to me there.  Everything I post to Facebook is public, and while it isn't necessarily the most interesting stuff on the 'net, you're welcome to read it :)

The pic above right is one of my favorite moments from one of my favorite movies, the Social Network.  Right after they've "gone live" they email a bunch of friends to tell them about it.  And Mark Zuckerberg's character says "the question is, who are *they* going to tell?"

The background truth is that I'll go back to blogging "someday", I do miss it.  But I've been super busy at Aperio with a massively interesting project, and involved in two startup companies as a consultant, and have done a little vacationing here and there, and have been cycling a lot, and ... blogging has fallen off my daily todo list.  But please stay tuned and please follow me on Facebook in the meantime :)

Well I'm moved.  And I now have FIOS!  And I like it; it's seriously faster than the DSL I had before.  And after two days of unboxing and messing around and running cables and configuring routers and ... whew, my servers are back up, and the bits you are reading right now came from deep inside a closet of my new house.  Yay.

Also yay: the Tivo HD is up and online via FIOS without any problems.  And the AppleTV is up and running too, with HD movies now streaming in realtime.  All good.

I shall have more to say "soon" - assuming I ever get back to blogging, that is - please stay tuned...

Hi there!  I'm still in my self-imposed exile from blogging, but I thought I'd poke my head out for a second and say "hi"...  I haven't forgotten you.  My deeply nested yak shaving as I reconfigure my blogging regime continues, and I must tell you many other things have interfered with my recovery.  Not least of which, is: I'm moving!  This is the last post I will ever make from my old house, in which I have lived for ten years.  It's kind of sad, and kind of exciting, and kind of a lot of work.

Ah, the life at sea ... actually it's just a little lake.  But I'm looking forward to living on it :)

I live in Westlake Village, and there is a Westlake Lake, and it has an island, and as of tomorrow I will be living on it.  Among all the things I'm moving is my 11-year-old-PC-turned-into-a-webserver, on which this blog is hosted.  So there will be a disruption in the force, and if all goes well I'll be back on the air in a day or two.  Stay tuned, I will keep you posted, assuming I make it there :)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
Wow, 2012

I'm tempted to say a lot about 2011, but it's late, and I'm ... well ... let's just say I was at a friend's house and we celebrated with a little wine tasting.  So maybe I'll just say best wishes to all of you for an amazing 2012.  We can't change the past, but we can make the future whatever we want it to be.  Choose wisely!
