Health Information Management

Health information management is the study of acquiring, analyzing and protecting information vital to providing quality patient care. Highly in demand, these professionals demonstrate leadership and management of health information in many forms, from paper and scanned documents to electronic files.

KU offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management as a two-year degree program, as well as a flexible progression program for individuals holding the RHIT credential who wish to pursue the B.S. degree.

Applications

spacer The regular deadline to apply to KU's Health Information Management program is February 1 each year. Applications received after Feb. 1 will be accepted until the next class has been filled.

Students enter the program in fall semester in August.

Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management

In KU's two-year B.S. program on the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kan., students work with the latest technology at a top academic institution sharing a complex with the region's premier academic health center, The University of Kansas Hospital.

To be eligible for admission, students must complete their first two years of undergraduate prerequisites from KU's Lawrence campus or another qualified accredited institution. Students on the Lawrence campus interested in this program should declare pre-health information management as their major. They also must contact the KU Department of Health Information Management for assignment to an adviser.

After graduation, the student becomes eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Association National Registry Examination that allows the successful candidate to be officially recognized as a Registered Health Information Administrator and utilize the RHIA credential after their name.

Joint Bachelor of Science/Masters Program

The joint Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management and Master of Health Services Administration (BSHIM/MHSA) program is offered through KU's Department of Health Policy and Management in association with the Department of Health Information Management at the KU Medical Center. By participating in the intensive, full-time bridge program, students can achieve both degrees in five years. Students pursuing the BSHIM/MHSA will be prepared to assume management and executive positions in health-related organizations and to bring their expertise in health information management to these positions.

Accreditation and Student Outcomes

The KU Health Information Management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education, 233 N. Michigan Avenue, 21st Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-5800. Documents relating to accreditation status are available at the department office by request. Information for students.

Seventeen students graduated in 2011, of which 94% are currently employed and/or seeking continued education.  The prior two years graduate placement rate is 100%. Twenty-four students graduated in 2012, including three from the RHIT-RHIA progression program.  At the time of graduation, 15 students were employed, two were pursuing continued education and two were employed and seeking education. The KU HIM traditional program attrition rate for the past three years is 3.7%.
