Best Mom Blogs of 2011. The BList vs Babble.

by Dumb Mom on January 2, 2012

So let’s just go ahead and talk about the Babble 100 Top Mom Bloggers who will rule this world for eternity thing of 2011.

Am I bitter?  Probably.

I mean, there are people on that list who I know (like personally) and love reading (like madly) and I am proud of them for earning the honor.

Really.  Truly.  All the freakin’ way.

But as adoring mom-blog-fan-girl as I am I know that also I have this whole hey-I’ve-been-working-like-a-blog-slave-for-like-three-years-and-Babble-won’t-even-retweet-me-let-alone-call-me-awesome thing that won’t stop niggling in the back of my brain.

It makes me defensive (of pBd and the relative awesomeness I’ve worked it into) and a little bit ugly.

On the inside (I still look pretty rockstar on the outside, don’t trip).

And it sucks because, dude, I swear it, I’m so totally not even sorta the jealous type.

Seriously.

And, I’m not even remotely the So-last-week-I-got-chosen-as-one-of-the-most-awesome-people-in-the-modern-world bragging type.

I actually break into a sweat when I have to share links to my own work or accolades.

Not because I don’t want anyone to know (I want the world to know really), just because I feel all annoying and mean girl about it when I’m all go-read-me-because-I’m-awesome-and-you’re-not with my links and crap.

Maybe people don’t think that?

Maybe they do?

I don’t know.

But I do know that choosing to love a blog has a bunch to do with how they make me feel when I visit (like part of the community), how their writing touches me (pretty much I just want to be forced into laughter; the harder the better actually), and if they are genuine and authentic and fun to be around (not contrived, with forced curse words, or an I’m-so-the-bomb-it’s-not-even-funny attitude).

I don’t care if the entire world is jockin’ them other bloggers think they’re pretty.

I don’t care if they have a bazillion comments on the most random post about nothing; particularly if they didn’t comment or respond to any of them (based on my personal research of leaving a comment every single day for a month to never, ever receive a response of any sort).

And, I don’t care what Babble says.

Okay, so I totally care what Babble says just like every other mom blogger in the modern world, because I love Babble and would freakin be so super honored if I made the list next year or ever because I really am getting a complex over this whole thing because they are mom blog lovin’ supastars (too much kissing up?  Not enough?  I can go harder if you think it will help?!).

I know an awesome mama blogger when I see one (hello, what do you think the BList is about?!) which is why I think it’s time to share MY faves of 2011 (because my opinion matters even remotely as much as Babble’s does to you or any other random person who happens to stumble across my blog today).

Some of them are on Babble’s list, some of them are not.  Some of them get a hundred thousand hits a month, some of them are barely breaking a thousand, but all of them are mom gangsta (a quality probably only appreciated in the blogosphere by myself and 5 other people), awesome upping ladies of distinction and fun, and you know that’s all I give a care about.

Oh, and other bloggers think they’re pretty too.

Best of the BList: Top Mom Blogs of 2011 In Completely Random Categories Made Up Entirely By Me For My Personal Pleasure

Best Mom Blog By A Mom with Super Powers Added By the Fact That’s She’s Growing a Human Fetus RIGHT NOW

1.  Nice Girl Notes. She’s funny. Just really friggin’ funny. And gangsta. As evidenced by the awesomeness of the Nice Girl Notes Facebook page (seriously, I don’t know any other regular people who have 232 people talking about their page right now).

2.  Really, Are You Serious.  I may be partial to Kristen because not only does she have a fun blog (be sure to check out her meme, Mommy & Me Monday), but also, she’s magic.  At least when it comes to hooking up my blog when it breaks and gets all wonkified with it’s coding (at no fault of my own of course).  Check out her mom blog site and her blog designs site, Krizzy Designs (pronounced Kay-Rizzy in my head), too.

Best Mom Blog That Includes Video I Will Actually Watch Because It’s Not Lame or Annoying, But Filled with Awesomeness

1.  Mama Kat’s Losin’ It.  Personally, I’m not a huge fan of watching people’s vlogs.  Something about the fact that usually, they aren’t as funny as they think they are many are better writers than they are talkers I think?!  Not Mama Kat.  She’s as funny in print as she is in person.  And her videos are pretty much da bomb too.  And, yeah, she’ll probably make fun of me for saying that.

2.  Hmmm. Nope. Mama Kat’s the ONLY one.  I mean other people make pretty good vlogs, and I’ll watch them from time to time.  But they are usually hit or miss.  Or actually useful and informative.  MK’s are just funny.  And that’s why I like ‘em.

Best Mom Blog by a Mom Who Only Just Recently Became a Mom

1.  The Day Book Blog.  Fashionable, funny, and funky fresh.  She is so making this Babble Mom list thing now that she’s a mom.  Totally.

2.  Rockstar Diaries.  Photo happiness.  And other happiness too.  But you know how easily I get distracted by pretty photos.

Note: Both of these bloggers are DC area peeps just like me.  Not sure why come their coolness hasn’t rubbed off on me more?!

Best Mom Blog by a Mom Who Knows Her Way Around a Camera and Ain’t Afraid to Show It

1.  A Bit of Sunshine. Where you will find an awesome and challenge photo project called Ten on Ten.

2.  The Paper Mama.  What I love about Chelsea’s blog is that her photos are so perfectly captured.  They may or may not be technically perfect all the time, but they are perfectly perfect anyway for their ability to capture moments and meaning so well.

3.  Mamahood Among Other Things.  I’ve never seen a photo on this site that didn’t make me smile.  they way she captures moments, as they happen, in real life is spectacular.

4.  Project Alicia.  Also pretty wicked with a camera, Alicia’s blog is like an online photojournal of her family’s entire life.  She turns her lens perfectly on all of their moments sharing pictures of their surroundings as well as of their first fishing trips and holiday celebrations.  Plus, her weekly photo linky is the perfect place to find and connect with photo lovers all over the world!

Best Mom Blog by a Mom Who Is Just As Funny As I Am or Possibly Way Funnier But I Will Never Admit It

1. Mommy Shorts. Because her photo contests are hilarious and inspired. And also, just her words make me cackle sometimes.

2. Nucking Futs Mama. Funny on blog, even funnier on Twitter.

3.  Ooph.  The name in itself makes you giggle, but her blog is beyond rad.  She’s a Dude Mom too so naturally that ups her overall awesome infinitely.

Best Mom Blog by a Mom Who Has a Whole Mess of Kids But Somehow Still Seems Really Normal and Not at All Cultish

1.  Mom of 6.  With 6 kids to care for you’d think Sharon would be a discombobulated mess.  I guess that’s just how I would be if I doubled the number of kids up in here.  She’s totally organized, and she’s even pleasant to be around.  Not the yelling, un-showered, mess of a woman I would be if you sent 3 more dudes my way.

2.  Seven Clown Circus.  Five kids maybe doesn’t seem like a lot to you, but that’s probably just because you have five (or more) kids too!  To those of us who don’t, five little people is a bunch and we are easy to impress if you find time to wake up, shower, look and act normal, and also write a blog on a regular basis.  I have 3 kids and many days at least 75% of the aforementioned activities are largely impossible or highly unlikely.

Best Mom Blog Filled with Cool Stuff Found, Shared, or Made By Cool People

1.  She {hearts} It. Okay, so maybe you’re thinking this one isn’t totally fair because I write over there. BUT. I’m not giving the site props because I of my input. It’s more of an in-spite-of-my-infrequent-and-not-really-that-exciting input head nod actually. Because all of the other ladies who share what they heart (not just reviews and giveaways, but recipes, craft projects, gardening tips, and more) do a super job of making that site rockstar.

2.  TeachMama.com.  Great ideas for teaching your kid stuff to make them smarter, like readin’, writin’, and ‘rithmetic (which, incidentally, she spells correctly).

Best Mom Blog by a Mom Who Looks Like She’s Still Kid-les and Cool Because She’s Still Super Stylish and Hardly Ever Sticky Looking in Public

1.  Harpers Happenings.  Because I not only love how adorable she and her little human look with stylishness, but also, her photos=awesome-sauce with a cherry on top.  So, so cool.  And, I’m not just saying that because I feel all old and decrepit when I look at them.  It’s cause it’s true.

2.  Bon Bon Rose Girls.  Pretty chicks wearing and doing pretty things.

Best Mom Blog About Life, Love, and General Awesomeness

1.  JusticeFergie.com.  One of my favorite lifestyle blogs filled with everything from how to look stylin’ for football games to hosting a succesful blog conference for women.  She’s so amazing at what she does she made the Babble list too, although I’m thinking she is gonna be way more jazzed (a word I vow to never use again) about making the BList!

2.   Live and Love… out loud.  Such a wonderful place filled with so many good things (and some less good, but shared beautifully all the same): photography, life stories, joy, happiness, and some times a little bit of good ole fashioned fun.  I love that Kristi, mama behind the blog, is such a wonderful member of the blogging community.  And also, her kids are cute!

Best Mom Blog that Reminds You to Love Yourself

1. Just. Be. Enough.  Perfect site to go to to remind yourself that you are awesome even on the days that you feel like shoving your face in the garbage disposal.  You know, those days.

2.  My Brown Baby.  What I love about her blog is that while being entertaining, informative, and fun to read, she also reminds me that I should be proud of not only the things I’ve accomplished in my life, but also of who I am.  And, I should probably talk to The Dudes about doing that sorta thing too.

Best Mom Blogs with Strong Community Interaction

1.  Scary Mommy.  Totally one of the most influential blogging women ever who is simultaneously actually a nice, normal, sane and not even slightly stuck-up human being (which is actually harder to find than you might think).  She has so much coolness going on (SERIOUSLY, IF YOU DON’T BUY HER BOOK I WILL SWEEP YOUR LEG IF I SEE YOU ON THE STREET)* but she still finds time to be supportive and come up with amazing ways to make other people happy.  While also keeping her hair adorably curled and styled beautifully.  She’s scary alright.  Scary awesome.

2.  Things I Can’t Say.  Which is actually code for things-she-can’t-say-because-she’s-too-nice-to-actually-say-something-mean-even-if-the-person-totally-deserved-it.  Great meme’s, great Twitter talker, great chick.

Best Mom Blog by Someone Who Actually Knows Stuff, Like Science or how to cook, or Something.

1.  Toddler Planet.  Known affectionately (and actually officially on Twitter) as Why Mommy, because her answer isn’t just “because I said so” like mine usually is.  And also, she is an amazing woman with a heart even bigger than her brain.  Which is massive by the way.

2.  Tech Savvy Mama.  Another Babble head nod recipient who I’m sure will be throwin’ up some gang signs for making my list too.  All kinds of info about tech related products and life.

3.  Our Best Bites.  I judge pretty much every human by whether they are likely to get caught outside in pajama jeans their ability to appreciate a tasty treat, followed closely by how funny they find me are.  I doubt these ladies have even heard of me, so making them laugh is outta the question, but man do the make a mean dessert.  And, I don’t recall ever seeing them rock jammie jeans on their blog?!

Best Mom Blog Not About Cats or Anything Else Weird By Someone Who is Just Good People (I’ve met them all in person so I can prove that they are really nice ladies and NOT creepy, patchy chest haired, old men in West Virginia trailer parks)

1. Momma Made it Look Easy. I talked to my mom just this morning about what a sweet woman Jen is.  I wouldn’t even think of going to Texas without making a trip to see her.  Not that I’m EVER going to Texas again if I can help it.  Anyway, her blog has become such an authentic read that makes you truly feel like you’re talkin’ to her over her back yard fence.

2.  Moments That Define Life.  She’s the mom behind Chick Mom Life; the Dude Mom Life counterpart.  This affiliation pretty much guarantees she’s awesome.

3.  The Daily Dribbles.  I like that her blog is really about being a mom.  The ups, the downs, the inbetweens.  Plus, she is an awesome blog buddy!

Best Mom Blog That’s Not Really a Mom Blog, but Should Still Be Read By All Moms Who Do Now or Plan to Ever Write a Blog

1.  The SITS Girls.  Best place online to find quality blogs and female bloggers to connect with meaningfully.

So, who is your favorite mom blogger of 2011?!   Feel free to say ME, but I will totally be cool with it if you share someone not on this list.  I have a February BList to think about!

*Jill does not know about or at all endorse my bullying.  I’m bullying you all on my own volition.  Because I like it.

Did anyone see that blogger who wrote about tween video games? I’m trying to find her, but I seem to have lost the URL. Her last post was about the Fashion Fantasy Game, I think.

Who gets to make these “favorite lists” anyway? Can I make my own? If so, I nominate you to pole position, sister. Loved your envious rant, and I’m sure every blogger out there has felt the exact same way at least once (a day). Glad I stumbled over this, even if it is a year late spacer
