Most of the case studies on this website are works of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events, locales, organizations, or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.
The OEC allows documents for which it holds the copyright to be used for non-commercial educational purposes, where republication (in print or on the Internet) is not involved. In classrooms and individual presentations, hard copy printed handouts are okay. Linking to OEC pages is also acceptable. Many OEC documents do not have a listed author; see citation requirements below.
The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) grants permission to use the case and commentary material found in the OEC, with the citation indicated on those pages. These materials are found in the volumes produced by the APPE Graduate Research Ethics Education project and edited by Brian Schrag.
Where authors are identified in OEC documents, permission or the permission policy can occasionally be found at the top or bottom of the articles or relevant section. Over the years of its existence, the OEC team of students and advisors prepared cases and commentaries; the OEC generally holds the copyright for these materials and they can be used for educational purposes, with appropriate citation.
Other individual authors generally hold the copyrights for their work. They must be contacted for permission.
The bottom of each OEC page provides a suggested citation. Elsewhere on the page or in the article, information can occasionally be found about permission to reproduce, both when the OEC has copyright and when authors have given permission. Otherwise, users should contact the author of the article, case study, or other material for permission and further citation requirements.
The OEC does not allow republication (in print or electronically) of materials for which it holds the copyright. Dr. Schrag and other authors should be contacted for their permission. The OEC makes one exception; it allows others to translate its materials into other languages and post those on the Web with a link to the OEC English original.
It is the policy of the OEC not to link to any commercial sites, including those with "org" URLs that contain advertising. For all reputable non-commercial educational and research sites, the OEC has actively sought to link to them with annotated links from appropriate OEC pages (of our choosing).
