VideoBox : Review

I first created the category "Mega Sites" to classify sites like this - a single paysite that buys up thousands of full DVDs from multiple production houses, splits them into scenes and categories, then delivers them to you under a single, searchable interface. I've reviewed a number of these type sites to date, (and with the exception of VideosZ), none come close to hitting the mark that VideoBox makes.

With over 4,600 DVDs online, the amount of video present on the site is enormous. Although Video Box does not produce any of the content themselves, you will find recognizable movies from Brandon Irons, Smash Pictures, Red Light District, Elegant Angel, Lethal Hardcore and more. They update every day, and they are currently adding content to the site at the rate of over 5 DVDs per day.

The one aspect I especially love about VideoBox is the user interface - the site is a breeze to navigate and use. Every movie is sorted, categorized and databased into a system that makes it simple to find whatever you're looking for. You can search, browse by genre, model, content type, studio, or check out the user-voted "best of site" videos. In addition, because the site has so many members, each video also has a large amount of user comments, which range from helpful to downright hilarious. Streaming playback is done on-site through a flash interface, and if you come across a section of a scene that you particularly like, you can easily click-drag to loop it over and over. You can also download any scene you like - to store locally for later offline playback.

In fact, the free tour of VideoBox shows you this exact interface - and is the same one that that paid members use, but only allows you to watch 3 "free previews" through the flash player before shutting down playback functionality until you register.

Access to the site begins at $9.95 per month. Be aware, however, that this $9.95/mo pricing level eliminates the DVD quality resolution (640x480) from the playback options, but still allows a still-respectable 480x352 resolution. Since their pricing model centers around low cost monthly memberships (and using a larger resolution takes up more bandwidth), they have opted to require you to pay more to view the movies at a higher resolution. If you are willing to invest in 10 months of access up front, however, they let this rule slide, and you receive a membership with high resolution downloads enabled for $9.95/mo.

To be honest, all the membership levels on this site have enormous value. Think of it this way - any one of the titles on VideoBox will sell as a DVD in a retail shop for the price of one month's membership. Value-wise, this membership is like getting a 'buy 1 get 4,600 free' deal.
