Program Overview

Electronic media have a profound impact on daily life and on the future of local and global communities. The School of Communication Electronic Media Program, consisting of three distinct majors, is dedicated to nurturing the aspirations of men and women who seek professional careers in all types of electronic media, including television, radio, cable and online enterprises. The program emphasizes hands-on learning coupled with an appreciation for the underlying technology, history, economics, regulation and multicultural involvement of these professions.

The Broadcast Journalism major prepares students for professional careers in electronic news gathering, analysis and reporting. Along with taking journalism courses, our majors receive practical experience by providing news content for the school’s weekly half-hour cable newscast NewsVision and other media outlets. As a result, our students consistently win regional and national awards in scholastic competitions. The masters degree in Broadcast Journalism combines the rigor of academic inquiry with professional journalistic skills and best practices. No prior study of, or experience in, journalism is required to be eligible for the program.

The Media Management major provides students with a broad understanding of the business aspects of media, including knowledge and competencies in areas such as programming, marketing, operations, research and sales. Along with communication courses, students also take courses from the School of Business Administration.

The Electronic Media major offers students the opportunity to customize their communication interests. While many students focus on media production, others complete a mix of production and industry-related course work. Typically students take elective courses from several programs offered by the School of Communication.
In addition to formal classroom work, all students within the program are encouraged to become involved in UMTV, the school’s cable television channel and WVUM-FM, the university’s student-run radio station serving South Florida.

Newly installed state-of-the-art all digital equipment puts the School of Communication on a par with contemporary broadcast stations, networks and production companies. In addition to spacious studios, control rooms and post production and uplink facilities, the school has remote broadcast capabilities from anywhere on the university campus.
