Research interests: Andrew's overarching areas of interest cover the history of global business and management, as well as occupational culture and identity. More specifically, he is interested in the business-politics axis, leadership, innovation and strategy, employment relations, business ethics (in all its historical forms), as well as regional, industrial and energy policy. Ongoing research projects include:
He is the author of two monographs, The Mine Management Professions in the Twentieth Century Scottish Coal Mining Industry (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2007), and the forthcoming, Aluminiumville: Government, Global Business & the Scottish Highlands (Crucible Books, 2012), as well as of essays in international edited collections and peer-reviewed journals. His research has also included consultancy work for private and public sector partners, such as Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Highland Council, and Rio Tinto Alcan.
Supervision experience and current supervisions: Andrew welcomes enquiries from prospective postgraduate research students.
He is currently co-supervising three PhD students: Darren McGuire (in conjunction with Prof. Sharon Bolton) on managing advocacy based Non-Governmental Organisations; Roseannah Murphy (AHRC funded) (in conjunction with Dr Eleanor Bell, English Studies), shipbuilding, deindustrialisation and the Glasgow novel; and Mary Clark (in conjunction with Dr David Kinloch, English Studies) exploring coal mining, therapy and memory.

External roles: Andrew is an external examiner for the MA (Hons) Economic and Social History, University of Glasgow, and the MA Heritage Studies, University of East London. He is also a Research Associate of the Centre for Business History in Scotland (University of Glasgow), the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (Glasgow Caledonian University and University of Strathclyde), the Institut pour l’histoire de l’aluminium, and the Scottish Oral History Centre (Strathclyde). In addition, he is an affiliated faculty member at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling at Concordia University, Montréal. Secretary of the Scottish Labour History Society, as well as Reviews Editor for Scottish Labour History, he is also a trustee of the Scottish Working People’s History Trust.
Industry/ business experience: Prior to taking a post-doctoral fellowship at the Centre for History, University of the Highlands and Islands in 2006, Andrew was Head of Energy Supply Policy in the Scottish Executive (now Scottish Government). During his time in the civil service, he also served as a policy advisor on skills and qualifications. In addition, He has worked for Whitbread PLC and EMI records.
