Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday. I probably typed that exact same sentence last year -- and the year previous -- but who cares; you can’t plagiarize yourself … or can you?

Why do I love Thanksgiving? Let me count the ways (a line that’s definitely not original) …

1. The food. For the record, there are no calories on Thanksgiving.

On Thursday, my table will hold a Judge Bean's fried turkey, corn pudding, broccoli casserole, fresh cooked string beans, stuffing packed with sausage, apples, dried cranberries and maybe a few pecans, an Edwards-brand Virginia ham, yeast rolls, oyster dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, pecan pie and "a few" other things.

Let me repeat: There are no calories on Thanksgiving. And for that I am thankful.

DR. BILL FLEET: Sawdust & Turnip Greens

We always try to make a good first impression. That’s what we are told to do from our earliest adolescence. Packaging does just that in retail commerce. But things don’t always turn out the way they look at first impression.

I eat quite a lot of low-calorie, low-fat frozen entrees. I buy several whenever they are on reduced prices. They make good lunches—easy to prepare, tasty (more or less) and easy to clean up.

The packages are inviting. They display sharply focused plates of chicken or beef with broccoli, carrots, peppers, water chestnuts and always rice or pasta. Occasionally I buy one with shrimp or salmon.

DR. JIM WELLBORN: There's a stranger in my house
A family holiday survival guide
While making plans to spend time with extended family over the upcoming holiday, I was reminded of a book I ran across some time ago by Laurence Gonzales, Deep Survival (2005). It’s about surviving in a familiar but unforgiving and hostile environment.

Gonzales interviewed survivors, gathered information on people who perished, and reviewed research on the psychology of survival. He then identified the qualities that separated survivors from those that were crushed under the merciless heel of Mother Nature’s boot.

So, as you prepare to be once again embraced into the warm bosom of your loving family, here are a couple of tips to avoid ending up in a struggle for your existence.

BOB McKINNEY: What I Know

It entered my mind to send my editor a note this week, asking her to re-run last year’s Thanksgiving column.

I thought better of it. I called in a favor along those lines less than two months ago and since I want to keep this gig going as long as possible, I decided I could surely come up with something fresh for Thanksgiving 2012 -- maybe not terribly original, but new.

Wilson Pike market's new owners share new vision
By JESSICA PACE

For Brentwood Home Page
Along Wilson Pike, a small white market with a green roof has stood for a very long time. Small houses perch on either side of it, and behind, a hill rises up where a train track runs across. This weekend, the f market will reopen as Jamison Whistle Stop with fresh from the farm food, music, and yes, beer and cigarettes too.
