Licensable Technologies

Licensing IBM Research technology can provide a quick, cost-effective alternative to independently developing a similar asset and can contribute to shorter time to market, reduced development expense, and more competitive products and services.

We have highlighted here a selection of IBM Research technologies developed at the Almaden Research Center (ARC) which are available for external licensing to enterprise end-users and value-added resellers. They range from broadly applicable horizontal technologies that can benefit a wide range of applications—such as middleware for grid computing—to specialized technologies that target a particular application, such as detecting single photons at telecom wavelengths in quantum cryptography. Some of these technologies may add value to the licensee's existing products, where others could provide the basis for entirely new products or perhaps even an entirely new company.

Hippocratic Database

The Hippocratic Database is a disclosure control and compliance auditing middleware solution - targeted primarily for the protection of HIPAA and other forms of private data, and for highly efficient Sarbanes-Oxley compliance auditing. Generally, the Hippocratic Database requires no modificaton of applications or underlying databases, but permits access control down to the database cell level. Storage efficient auditing enables easy determination of who accessed designated data - when, and for what purpose - at any point. The flexible system simplifies the installation and enforcement of a corporate privacy policy and allows dynamic policy updates. Additional data protection components such as Sovereign Information Sharing, Data De-Identification, Order Preserving Encryption, Watermarking, Privacy Preserving Data Mining and K-Anonymization can be added as options. OptimalGrid

OptimalGrid, is middleware that simplifies creating and managing large-scale, connected, parallel grid applications. It optimizes performance and includes autonomic grid functionality. You supply the code that represents your basic problem algorithm, and OptimalGrid manages everything else—problem partitioning, problem piece deployment, runtime management, dynamic level of parallelism, dynamic load balancing, and even system fault tolerance and recovery. OptimalGrid brings the immense potential of grid computing easily within reach of developers who aren't grid infrastructure experts. eClassifier

The proliferation of e-mail and the World Wide Web has contributed to a dramatic increase in the quantity of electronic text. To leverage this body of data as knowledge, the content must first be broken down into usable subsets. ARC's eClassifier technology provides an interactive infrastructure for the statistical and visual identification of key or salient categories in any document collection. Other structured document information, such as date of creation or author, can then be incorporated and analyzed within the tool to find trends or correlations. After the user has created one or more taxonomies in eClassifier, the tool can then accurately model these document categories so that any additional documents can be automatically and rapidly categorized. This classification capability can be used to identify documents of interest to the user, such as emails on a particular topic or patents in an important technology. Shorthand Aided Rapid Keyboarding -- Text Input for Pen-Based Computers

Shorthand Aided Rapid Keyboarding is a novel method for efficiently writing text into pen-based computers, such as tablet computers, PDAs and any other electronic device with a stylus or touch sensitive surface. Unlike today's longhand, character-based text input methods, this technology enables the user to gesture "sokgraphs" (Shorthand On Keyboard Graphs), formed by word movement patterns on a stylus keyboard. Unlike traditional shorthand that requires a large amount of learning, Shorthand Aided Rapid Keyboarding can be used by visually tracing the letters on the stylus keyboard. Over time, sokgraph patterns build up in the user's memory and the basis of writing will seamlessly shift from visual guidance to memory recall. The stylus keyboard works as a training wheel and a mnemonic device towards shorthand gesturing, enabling both initial ease of use and high performance as experience builds. Vinci Network Services Platform

Vinci is a language-neutral architecture for building distributed systems based on lightweight XML document exchange. Vinci provides loose-coupling similar to other service-oriented architectures (SOAP/WSDL/UDDI), but with performance rivaling that of more efficient distributed object computing platforms (CORBA, RMI).
