Liver Imaging Atlas

Interactive Web Based Dynamic CT Atlas of Liver Pathology

Concept of the Interactive Atlas

The Liver Imaging Atlas is a collection of common and uncommon liver pathology.

Each case is categorized in three ways:

  1. by imaging features on liver CT such as morphology, attenuation, and pattern of contrast enhancement;
  2. by general diagnostic category (e.g., neoplasm, infection, pediatric); and
  3. by index.

Organization of liver pathology by its imaging characteristics is a unique feature that can be useful to the radiologist analyzing an unknown liver condition or lesion. A search of the atlas performed by selecting specific CT features will result in a list of cases and diagnoses that share imaging features.

Alternatively, performing a search by diagnosis or diagnostic category will produce cases to illustrate the spectrum of imaging features within a specific diagnosis or diagnostic category.

The information obtained from such searches may help the radiologist analyze an unknown liver lesion and construct an image-based differential diagnosis.

Searching the Atlas

Images for specific cases may be reached in one of three ways:

Search by Imaging Features
Select characteristics from a categorized list of imaging features. The search result will display every case in the atlas that demonstrates every feature that has been selected.
Search by Diagnostic Category
Select a diagnostic category to view a list of cases within a specific category
Search by Index
Select a tab – Imaging Features, Diagnostic Category, or Diagnosis – to search for cases. Imaging Features and Diagnostic Category tabs allow the user to view all cases with a specific imaging feature or under a diagnostic category.
The Diagnosis tab allows the user to search for all cases with the same diagnosis (e.g., all cases of hepatocellular carcinoma) and to view specific cases under each diagnosis (e.g., hepatocellular carcinomas that contain fat).

Reviewing Search Results

After a search is performed the results are listed in a truncated form with up to four thumbnail sized images displayed. Clicking on the View button or the More Images button for an individual case will expand the case and display all images of a case in a larger size. Clicking on an image will open a window with the image displayed at full resolution. By clicking at the left or right spacer margin of the image window, the image within the window can be advanced forward to next image or back to the preceding image in the case. The left and right arrows on your keyboard may also be used to move back and forth through the images for a case.

Clicking on the diagnosis itself, will display all cases with the same diagnosis. Cases with the same diagnosis may differ by imaging features, by various aspects of that diagnosis (subtitle of the diagnosis) or by both.

The DDx button will produce a secondary search that results in every case within the atlas that contains the same imaging features as the case on which feature is activated.

To refine a search click the clear button or click on the back button of your browser to stepwise go back in your search history.
