2010 World MMA Awards live coverage

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 01, 2010 at 8:15 pm ET
spacer LAS VEGAS – MMAjunkie.com is on scene and reporting live from the 2010 World MMA Awards.

The first-of-its-kind industry awards program, which was launched by "Fighters Only" in 2008, recognizes and honors the best of MMA from the past year.

Today's ceremony takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Watch the broadcast live on Versus.com at 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT), and follow along as we post the winners live here.

Although the World MMA Awards program launched in 2008, this is the second year for the live ceremony. Dozens of MMA notables and other celebrities are in attendance and presenting awards in 19 different categories, and UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and Versus reporter Molly Qerim host the black-tie event. An international fan vote that drew hundreds of thousands of ballots determined all of the finalists and winners.

Today's ceremony re-airs on the regular Versus cable station next week on Dec. 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

UFC awards! I would like to see Toney vs. Couture win submission of the year.
Randy did get a black belt for that submission remember.

Kobi123 on Dec 01, 2010 at 1:29 pm ET
yeah but it wasn't all that special, he submitted a guy with no ground defense whatsoever, sure it was a big fight but an easy and regular submission. the submission of the year needs to either be special or diffrent or with a comeback, like matt hughes, who everyone thought will lose but ended up submitting richardo in a way that hardly anyone ever got submitted like that
thats my vote

BONESPIDER on Dec 01, 2010 at 3:01 pm ET
You could also include that submission Lytle threw on Matt Brown or that kneebar he rolled into against Brian Foster in Austrailia. Glad to see that Misaki/Santiago made the slate for FOTY that was a great back and forth matchup.

Delocated on Dec 01, 2010 at 12:56 pm ET
How the hell is Dan Hardy nominated for International FOTY?
He went 0-2 in 2010.
Also why is Michael Schiavello mentioned along with J. Silva, Dana, Coker as a candidate for leading man?
He's just the most annoying broadcaster in all sports.
Why are there all these stupid clothing awards?  Memorable ring entrance? Give me a break.
Most of these awards are moronic.

idontexist on Dec 01, 2010 at 1:20 pm ET
Yeah. There are alot of people who should have gotten nominations that didnt too.  Sarah Kauffman and Gerald Harris for KO of the year and Dan Hornbuckle and Scott Jorgensen for Sub of the year for example.

WhatTheHell on Dec 01, 2010 at 1:56 pm ET
I agree with you guys, but you gotta remember these awards are still in the newborn baby stage. Like everything else MMA you want to use things like the UFC and other already famous things so your audience can hopefully grow. Us regular fans will already be tuned in, they are just hoping to turn this into something worth watching. Give em some slack, they'll be evolving just like everything MMA.

Or Frausto knocking Rosi Sexton the F out, underdog takes out favorite, knees buckle....

Jrj6 on Dec 01, 2010 at 9:37 pm ET
I made my gf's knees buckle!

northsouthFTL on Dec 02, 2010 at 1:13 pm ET
So did I. Tell her same time next week

grimsgrind on Dec 01, 2010 at 11:33 pm ET
yeah these awards are a jOke....the judges can't be fighters, they're too much politics involved.

coreymb on Dec 01, 2010 at 3:19 pm ET
Anyone going to the awards? I'm hoping/planning on being there. Still real last minute to see if I work or not. Either way, I'll be able to peak in a little even if I am working !:)

IB4U on Dec 01, 2010 at 4:34 pm ET
How much is it to attend?  Are the fighters coming out too?

coreymb on Dec 01, 2010 at 7:10 pm ET
I think 55-99ish? My gf's dad is going, but it looks like I'm working now. Blah.

metalmania on Dec 01, 2010 at 4:00 pm ET
its pretty obvious who is gonna win 85 percent of these awards..i would bet on these awards if someone would take the bet..lmao. and randy getting his black belt for submitting toney made me laugh out loud seriously. lmao

machinegun on Dec 02, 2010 at 10:01 am ET
I agree.. getting your black belt for subbing a stay puffed marshmellow man..
Like hitting the easy button.

BigJew on Dec 01, 2010 at 6:52 pm ET
I would really like to see a Best MMA Radio Show category.
Our boys here would clean up.

BigJew on Dec 01, 2010 at 7:10 pm ET
LOL!
Looks like the UFC has no regard for the MMA Awards tonight and is airing a 2hr finale for TUF.
Even if the UFC is going to clean up every award it is nominated for. That's irony!

HugeFitchFan on Dec 01, 2010 at 7:19 pm ET
I think Josh R should get best referee for not stopping the Lesnar fight too early.

I think BJ Penn would have KO of the year but I guess it missed the deadline?

I think without a doubt Dan 'the Outlaw' Hardy will win international fighter of the year

Fahqnl15 on Dec 01, 2010 at 8:03 pm ET
  1. Seriously? That is one of the reasons I cant stand Rosenthal. Shoulda stomped brocks head in, though it did leave it up to Cain's awesome win so theres that
  2. Ya BJ was too late
  3. Maybe last year for Hardy, but this year no fkn way, dude shoulda got his arm snapped by GSP and got ktfo but condit
That is all... really i just wanted to rag on Rosenthal

YPG on Dec 01, 2010 at 8:52 pm ET
The Condit fight was after the event deadline that the awards go on.

wandko on Dec 01, 2010 at 7:20 pm ET
i wonder if diego sanchez be there....

Trainwreck170 on Dec 02, 2010 at 1:00 am ET
haha, you mean drunk off his a$$ deigo sanchez? the one that showed up last year? haha, that was the only time I have ever enjoyed hearing Deigo talk.

Wolfman213 on Dec 02, 2010 at 7:55 am ET
That's an easy one, "YES!!!  YES!!!  YES!!!"  haha god I hate that

troubleman on Dec 01, 2010 at 7:26 pm ET
good luck john morgan, UFC PFPC would be a dumb snooze-fest without him.
no p4p best fighter award, shame. no best commentator award, too bad..

vcarey10 on Dec 01, 2010 at 8:09 pm ET
Just so everyone knows, the awards are from 9/09 to 9/10 so guys like Brock being nominated to Fighter of the Year and excluding BJ's knockout are valid.

fast on Dec 01, 2010 at 8:52 pm ET
2 Junkie nominations. Good luck

edub001 on Dec 01, 2010 at 9:08 pm ET
FOTY- Frankie Edgar (beat BJ twice, nuff said), but Melendez belonged on this list also IMO.
