What a great house! The wingless plane in the back yard is a strange and cool element.
So amazing! If this is any peek at what's to come, I'm sure to be blown away!
What are the bathroom walls made of?
This looks like a children's paradise to me. I will be interested to see what the main house will look like.
Very fun to see comments on the shed. We really did it DIY with all of the choices having to do with cheap and something we could do ourselves and something we could get on Kauai (very limited shopping options). The plane in the back yard was something we found at a scrapyard and had grand ideas to transform into a play structure (never happened, and now my kids may almost be too old). The bathroom walls are polycarbonite. Tony, the architect, told us they would look like lightboxes at night and they really are beautiful. They are big lanterns once it gets dark. That is one of my favorite elements in the shed. Thanks for noticing!
These pictures make me happy. : )
Love how you left the beams and studs exposed. More people should do it
wow! this is an amazing home! i so love the kitchen and the dining area. ample light. perfect!
What fun to come here and find so many more images from our shoot than the mag was able to run in the article. Happy to hear that the pictures are making people... happy. How could you miss with this house and this family?!!
Hey Tanya, Your home looks great and we hope you & Chris are doing well. Our kids want to come play in the tree house, which looks like something I would need a general contractor to help build :) Maybe Dwell has a "DIY home for dumbies" program for us in LA :) Best wishes, health, & happiness in your beautiful, new home.
I love the kitchen drawers. Where are they from?
I LOVE this house! this is my dream!! I was wondering if you could list some of the ideas you had to help create it and some of the main building materials! I plan on building a house in Northern California in the next few years.......... this is the ideal style and materials i want for my house! Thanks so much!
Hi Chris & Tanya & Jackson and Zeke, Dad told me about this article, so glad I found it online. I absolutely love what you have created here! What awesome ideas, a loving evolution and some hard work! The floors are exquisite...and the tree house is wonderful. Many good wishes for your happiness in this unique and amazing home!
A simple tent in this setting would look amazing. What you have created just puts it over the top Swiss family Robinson style. Great use of simple materials.
I know homes are quite expensive out your way - how much did this one run you ? I know y'all said cheap, but what is 'cheap' in Hawaii?
Interesting house.. I'm over here on BI with a coffee shack demo coming up. Mahalo nui for some great ideas. I love Hardie board too..
What DIY kit did you use?
I believe the kitchen is Ikea. free-standing kitchen Värde
What a great story - and a great home. Simple, honest and beautiful
Wow, this is seriously beautiful home. Small, but well connected.
Lovely!! A wonderland for children, too... how perfect! So wonderful that they made their own home to fit their needs.
