Academic study in “Global Health” at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is not limited to a single department or program. It is a pervasive aspect in every department and featured throughout the curriculum.

Studying global health at SPHTM allows students to focus in on these issues and compare and contrast both the problems in different communities and the differing approaches to address them.

Learn how you can study global health in each of the departments:

  • Biostatistics and Bioinformatics: Students master statistical methods to
be employed in a wide range of interdisciplinary and global applications. The analysis and management of health and scientific data is essential in understanding how globalization impacts human health. The burgeoning field of genomics demonstrates how much of our everyday behavior and health concerns can be drilled down to genetic sources that are often distinct from geography.
  • Epidemiology:  Students gain a strong foundation in epidemiological methods and disease specific epidemiology with applications across the globe through research and applied problem solving.
  • Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences: Students in this discipline study, discuss, research, and explore community solutions to global health issues, and community-based participatory approaches are employed to solving global health problems.
  • Global Environmental Health Sciences: Environmental factors directly impact the health and well-being of people throughout the world. Assessing and managing environmental factors is pivotal to protecting health and preventing disease in all communities.
  • Global Health Systems and Development:  The academic approach in this department seeks to improve the health of populations worldwide through strengthening health systems, building stronger communities, and facilitating healthy behaviors in an increasingly globalized world.
  • Tropical Medicine:  We are unique among universities and schools of public health in offering a distinct tropical medicine program. Students take advantage of our long history and international reputation in this area for research in vector-borne and other tropical infectious diseases.

Our approach to global health demonstrates the interconnectedness of public health across the globe. Infectious diseases like malaria, dengue, HIV, and influenzas impact communities everywhere and do not stop at the border or at customs.  Similarly, chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes are of concern in both high- and low-income countries.  Common determinants of health – physical activity, nutrition, sanitation, and violence – impact lifestyles in all types of communities and, in fact, the world is becoming more alike in these issues rather than demonstrating our differences.
