UNEP's North American region comprises Canada and the United States of America. UNEP RONA’s mission is to build support in the region for UNEP's work, to promote effective responses to international environmental challenges and to foster cooperation on environmental issues between North America and the broader international community. To achieve this mission, UNEP RONA’s strategy is to promote collaboration between UNEP and all sectors of North American society, including U.S. and Canadian governmental institutions, the private sector and civil society groups, and to provide UNEP with North American perspectives.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Gap Widening as Nations Head to Crucial Climate Talks in Doha Keeping Average Global Temperature Rise to Below 2 Degrees C Still Do-Able With Potentially Big Cuts Possible from Buildings, Transportation and Avoided Deforestation--But Time Running Out

Risks to Sovereign Bonds Posed by Overuse of Natural Resources Need Greater Attention, says New Report Natural Resource Risk Profiles Calculated for Five Pilot Countries

    spacer London / Nairobi, 19 November 2012
    – Some countries’ sovereign debt ratings may be less robust than many investors may realize, if depletion of natural resources are taken into account, a new report released today suggests. Loss of soils, forests and fisheries, as well as rising resource costs, are likely to become increasingly important to a nation’s economic health, and may affect its ability to repay or refinance sovereign debt, says the study issued by the United Nations Environment Programme’s Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).
